Fernando Birri talks about thenew latino cinema

We met with fernando Birri who shared his view on latino cinema.
Fernando Birri is one of the exponents of the "New Latin American cinema". He was guest of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival. Fernando Birri gives us his thoughts, and he started by saying that that the Festival was "wonderful".

Fernando Madedo: could you compare the current cinema with the cinema from the sixties in Latin America

Fernando Birri: You want a theoretical concept… this should be talked with a deep look. But, the comparison takes one word only: Identity.
I want to say, the problems of the national identity - I think that this is the same thing, now and in the sixties- and searches for a national identity.
Also the diversity, because if the things repeat, it would be terrible. And, searches for new languages. There is a coherency and a fidelity - maybe not meant to be made, but it doesn't interest me - to certain searches and certain queries that we made in the sixties, and at the same time, getting all languages that were arising, into the audiovisual. I think, honestly, that there is renovation but not contradiction. I feel like mine all young cinema that is currently made in Argentina.

FM: What do you think about this edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival?

FB: I have been impressed. It was wonderful. I saw that the organization of the Festival was very good. I have been astonished by the visit of the President to the Festival, and his words too. It not happen every day. And another thing that I rescue is "Memoria del saqueo" by Fernando Solanas, it is another beautiful thing that I lived in my visit to Argentina.
