Director Bruce McDonald is coming to the Victoria Film Festival for a Q&A session

January 13th: Iconic Canadian director Bruce McDonald will be attending the screenings of his most recent works Trigger and Hard Core Logo II at the Victoria Film Festival (VFF), where he will discuss his films during a question and answer session at the screening.

Trigger: Friday • February 4th • Cap 6 Th 6 • 9:15 PM

Bruce will be joined by actor Don McKellar at this screening. This is a story about two women who must overcome past grudges in order to come together for a benefit concert. The two rock ‘n' roll women (Actresses: Molly Parker and Tracy Wright) who once shared a friendship and a band, now reunite twelve years later. In an interview with Eye Weekly, McDonald stated "...we had invited Tracy to be in the film sometime last year; time went on while we were finishing up some other things and Don [McKellar, Wright's husband] announced that Tracy had this life-ending disease, pancreatic cancer, and that she had six months to live. We'd been in discussions with Tracy about [Trigger] and she loved it and wanted to do it. So I guess we were all devastated and shocked and, in a way, this was a way we were going to help." Actor Don McKellar will also be at VFF's SpringBoard Talks (film and media talk event) on Sunday, February 6th, 2011; and will speak at 2:25 PM.

Hard Core Logo II: Sunday • February 6th • Cap 6 Th 6 • 6:45 PM

Bruce will be joined by producer Rob Merilees at this screening. Hard Core Logo II is a sequel to hard Core Logo. It's a documentary in which McDonald sets out to interview Care Failure, the lead singer of Canadian punk band Die Mannequin. Failure is in a mental institution in Florida; and claims to be channeling the spirit of Joe Dick, lead singer of Hard Core Logo. Bruce desperately tries to reach out to Failure in the hopes of saving the young rock star from the same tragic fate as Joe.

Bruce is recognized for his love of rock and roll and popular culture. Bruce began to demonstrate his cinematic skills from an early age. He studied film and photography at Toronto's Ryerson University, where he also made the short films: Merge (1980) and Let Me See... (1982); the latter won the Norman Jewison Award for best student film. The film screened at many film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. Canadian film director Norman Jewison, who is also founder of the Canadian Film Centre, was Bruce's mentor. Bruce worked (uncredited) as Jewison's assistant on Agnes of God (1985). The two director's relationship has continued over the years.

Today, Bruce carries an impressive list of productions in his film and television career. He has directed episodes of many award-winning television series including ReGenesis, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star, Lonesome Dove, Twitch City, and Queer as Folk. In addition to directing, Bruce's credits also include editor, actor and producer. McDonald recently finished shooting a video and documentary called The Rawside of Die Mannequin with Canadian band Die Mannequin. He is currently making a concert film on Broken Social Scene called This Movie is Broken.

The Victoria Film Festival screens about 160 films from all over the world. Each film is carefully handpicked to make sure that that the Film Festival audience sees the best of new cinema from a wide range of perspectives.
