Bust Magazine dynamite Film Festival

November 4 - 7, 2004
Two Boots Pioneer Theater
155 East 3rd St. @ Avenue A, NYC

Showcasing the work of the best and brightest "reel girls" around, THE BUST MAGAZINE FILM FESTIVAL will be hosting four dynamite nights of full-length features, documentaries, shorts, and animations, all of which embody the BUST Magazine mission: to tell the truth about women’s lives. From November 4-7 the Festival will feature 11 films by fiercely independent women filmmakers at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater, located at 155 East 3rd St. NYC between Avenues A and B (F/V to 2nd Ave.)

Kicking off the festival will be YEAR OF THE WOMAN by Sandra Hochman, the first documentary ever made about the women’s movement, filmed during the 1972 Democratic National Convention. This "lost" cinematic treasure—which has been locked in a vault for over 30 years—caused a sensation when it first debuted in Manhattan in October 1973, playing for five sold-out nights at the Fifth Avenue Cinema. Women lined up around the block to see the extraordinary footage of such cultural icons as Warren Beatty, Shirley Maclaine, Gloria Steinem, Art Buchwald, Dan Rather, Flo Kennedy, and many others getting prodded by Hochman into sharing their views on women and the feminist movement. Audiences and critics raved—historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. called it "the greatest documentary ever made"—but then the film disappeared. BUST’s screening of Year Of The Woman will be the first time this film has been seen in New York since 1973, and is being shown in conjunction with a large feature story about it in the current issue of BUST, on newsstands now.

Other festival highlights include MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE, a coming-of-age masterpiece by the late filmmaker Sarah Jacobson, introduced by the director’s mother Ruth Jacobson; a night of shorts about girlhood featuring the emotional sports documentary GIRL WRESTLER; the controversial strip club expose STRIPPED followed by a Q&A with filmmaker and former exotic dancer Jill Morley, and much, much, more!

Individual Festival tickets are $9, and a Festival Pass for $36 grants admission to all four nights and includes an invitation to a private opening-night party with the filmmakers, a one-year subscription to BUST Magazine, and a VIP gift bag with goodies from event sponsors BUST, Exit 9, Urban Outfitters, and Toys in Babeland. All advance sale tickets can be purchased online at the Festival’s official website Members of the media can contact Emily Rems, Film Festival Coordinator, at, or by phone at 212-675-1707 x103.

Since 1993, BUST Magazine has been providing an uncensored view on the female experience. BUST tells the truth about women's lives and presents a female perspective on pop culture. This event is BUST’s first Film Festival.
