We’d like to announce the 12 short films competing for the British Council Award for the Best Short at the 2012 9th London Short Film Festival (5 – 16 January 2012). The 12 films were selected by LSFF Director Philip Ilson and LSFF Producer Chloë Roddick:

Communion (Andrea Harkin)
Compulsion (Andrew McVicar)
A Cuillin Rising (Catriona MacInnes)
Dylan (Ania Winiarska)
Guerrillera (Elle Sillanpaa)
A Gun For George (Matthew Holness)
Hackney Lullabies (Kyoko Miyake)
I’ll Tell You (Rachel Tillotson)
Sh*tkicker (Neil Maskell)
Summit (Medeni Griffiths)

The judges to select the winning film are as follows:
Chris Collins: Senior Production Executive, British Film Institute Film Fund
Briony Hanson: Director of Films Dept, British Council
Helen Jack: Operations Director, Shooting People / Co-Director, UnderWire Festival
Kate Taylor: Exhibition & Distribution, Independent Cinema Office / board member, Flatpack Festival / curator, Project: New Cinephilia / + formerly festival co-director & co-founder, London Short Film Festival

The winning film will receive £500 and an award trophy, and will be announced at the Festival Closing Night at the ICA on Sunday 16 January, alongside our other Festival awards announcements.

Last year’s winner, Ruth Paxton, for her Digicult funded short PARIS/SEXY “was totally thrilled to hear PARIS/SEXYs title called as winner of the UK Film Council Award for Best UK Short at LSFF8.” She and her team felt “very honoured and grateful to the jury for their praise of the film.” These last months she has relocated to Amsterdam to develop her first feature script, LIAM FIGHTS THE DARKNESS with the Binger Filmlab.

You can see 5 of the nominated 12 films at our Future Voices screening at the ICA on Thursday 12 January, followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers, and hosted by Skillset. The 5 shorts are all films that have received Skillset support in some capacity.
