Awards of the 17th Geneva International Festival of Oriental Film (FIFOG)

6752u.jpeg6ro9g.png

The 17th Geneva International Festival of Oriental Film (FIFOG) took place from June 13 to 19 in Geneva and its municipalities. This year's edition is placed under the sign of Freedom...in the feminine way. It is chaired by the Lebanese writer Joumana Haddad.

Even if the heat wave has had an impact on the movement of festival-goers, the attendance of the public has been very honorable. The public has rediscovered the joy and pleasure of watching films and exchanging with filmmakers and guests who arrived in Geneva with difficulty, often after a long journey.

A rich program that celebrates freedom... in the feminine way

This edition presented about fifty films, 23 of which were directed by women and 27 by men. More than forty guests took part in this new vintage. The various debates, exchanges, artistic performances, meetings and educational screenings also took place and contributed to forge links, reduce distances and deepen the theme of Freedom... for women.

For their part, the three juries emphasized the quality, originality and relevance of the films presented. Indeed, the topics addressed, sometimes dramatic, sometimes poetic, show the diversity of film production in the East and remind the need not to forget certain dramas, such as those affecting the Yazidis, veiled by the burning news. Following this, they revealed their respective choices.

Amira by Diab Mohamed

"Unanimously, the Jury decided to award the FIFOG GOLD to "SOULA" by Salah Isaad, for its script, its structure, the development of the characters, the authenticity of the dialogue, the coherence between the elements and the director's ability to portray a whole life in one night, basically in a enclosed space. All of this contributes to conveying a credible, humane and powerful message, forcing the audience to take a different approach to the subject, away from prejudices and preconceived ideas."

Amira by Diab Mohamed

The Jury has chosen to award the FIFOG SILVER to "AMIRA" by Mohammed Diab, for dealing with a sensitive subject and the question of individual identity. Is it determined by genetics or by cultural and social belonging to a group/community?

The jury appreciated the actors' performance, the choice of locations and the dramatic rhythm.

SPECIAL MENTION: SCENARIO AND DIRECTION, Leila Bouzid for her film "A STORY OF LOVE AND DESIRE".

The Jury awarded the Special Mention to Leila Bouzid for her film "A STORY OF LOVE AND DESIRE", for the originality of the script and the authenticity of the dialogue. The Jury particularly appreciated the link established between classical Arabic poetry which is bold and largely forgotten today, and the young Arab generation in search of its identity. All this was translated into a perfectly mastered production"

SPECIAL MENTION: BEST ACTRESS, Soula Bahri, for her role in "SOULA

Roadblock by Dahlia Nemlich

"For its political and poignant message, which is at the heart of current events. We liked the heroine, who perfectly embodies freedom, emancipation, commitment and modernity, representative of the new generation of Arab women."

JURY'S SPECIAL MENTION: "Qahwet Ferial" by Mohanad Elkashef

"For its aesthetics and its moving musicality. Also for its valorization of the human being and the highlighting of the damage of marginalization "

JURY'S SPECIAL MENTION: "Baraye Bare Dovom" by Leila Akhbari

"For the acting and the parallelism between life and theater"

3. AWARDS - SCHOOL COMPETITION

The school jury is composed of about thirty students from the Geneva public school system.

SHAKWA by FARAH SHAER (LEBANON)

"The emotions felt are overwhelming (fear, you can see it). The closed location adds to the dialogues. Hoda is a very embodied character, as is the policeman, with credible acting. It is not necessarily a new look at the subject, but the issue is paramount, access to justice for women. In the end, the students really liked the approach, but they point out that in the theater, it would be much better for the image and sound."

INTEGRATED RECEPTION CLASS LISSIGNOL FROM GENEVA

FATALE ORIENTALE by HOLY FATMA (FRANCE)

"A film that pleased by its comic register to address a subject that is always topical, reality TV. Also, the fact of wanting at all costs to be under the spotlight and to manage to accept oneself as one is to be creative. Finally, by expressing this will to live freely, while being able to keep links with his family... "
