Audiard and Dardenne will open and close The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma

The 34th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma has chosen L’Enfant, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Belgium, 2005) and De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté, Jacques Audiard (France, 2005) as the opening and closing films for the Festival’s 34th edition, with screenings on Thursday, October 13 and Saturday, October 22 at the Imperial Cinema.

The Palme d’Or winner from this year’s Cannes Festival, L’Enfant, distributed in Quebec by TVA Films, tells the story of Bruno, a 20-year-old delinquent who lives from petty thievery and his girlfriend Sonia’s welfare cheques. When Sonia gives birth to their son, Bruno reacts with cold indifference; he prefers to live in the moment, and cares only about his schemes and his money. The Dardenne brothers, whose film Le Fils appeared at the FNC in 2002, have made a touching film about fatherhood and the acceptance of adult responsibilities.

On Thursday, October 13, in the magnificent Imperial Cinema, the screening of L’Enfant will be accompanied by a surprise for the assembled guests and festival-goers – who, for the first time, will be invited to the Festival’s opening gala. With the purchase of the Festival’s Imperial Badge, which provides admission to all screenings at the Imperial, members of the public will receive an invitation to the screening of L’Enfant and to the after-party at the Just For Laughs Museum, subject to space limitations.

Starring Romain Duris (L’auberge Espagnole, Les Poupées russes), De Battre mon cœur s’est arrêté tells the story of Tom who, at 28, seems to be following in the footsteps of his father, a shady real-estate broker. But a chance encounter leads him to believe that he could still take after his mother and become the virtuoso concert pianist he once dreamed of being. As he continues his dubious dealings, he prepares for a recital.
This terrific mystery by Jacques Audiard (Sur mes lèvres, Un héros très discret) will be shown as the centrepiece of the Festival’s closing gala at the Imperial Cinema on Saturday, October 22, with director Jacques Audiard and star Romain Duris in attendance.

De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté is distributed in Canada by Remstar/Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm.
