Anniversary edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival: a candy shop

Swiss Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga declared the 25th edition of the festival as open and started the race for the "Regard d'or", the main award of the festival (30'000 CHF). At the opening night the Chinese action film "Little Big Soldier", starring Jackie Chan, was shown in front of a full house and in presence of the producer Ramy Choi.

At the opening the Director of the festival, Edouard Waintrop, said: "For me a good festival is like a candy shop: Full of the best, but not one flavour is the same." And: "The world has changed, cinema has changed and also the film festival Fribourg has to change - and this is good."

During the next seven days everything in Fribourg is cinema: 114 films from almost all continents found their way into the city. Many of the films are on screen in Switzerland for the first time: The competition program alone is packed with 12 Swiss premieres. Among the highlights of the festival is the Panorama "Sakartvélo", which shows a unique retrospective of 17 Georgian films. Another hommage is dedicated to legendary Argentinan producer Lita Stantic.

Many of the filmmakers present their work in person in Fribourg. Already in town are American video artist Joan Logue, as well as the directors Raed Andoni (Palestine), Oleg Korsakov (Russia), Miguel Coyula (Cuba), Héctor Gálvez (Perou), Jeton Ahmetaj (Kosovo) und Michael Henry Wilson (USA). Also for the Swiss film industry the Festival is an important date in the calendar: more than 300 filmmakers and journalists are accredited so far. The festival again expects 30,000 spectators.

The award ceremony of the festival takes place on Saturday, March 26th.
