8th Tarifa Africa Film Festival Presents African Projects Seeking Co-Production

Ten African film directors will be pitching their new film projects at the 3rd Africa Produce Co-Production Forum to Spanish film producers and TV commissioning editors including representatives of Al-Jazeera Documentary Channel. África Produce, the only co-production forum for African films in Spain  takes place within the 8th Tarifa African Film Festival (FCAT) in Spain, from June 11th to 19th.

There are four feature projects and three documentaries selected from Cameroon, Mauritania, South Africa, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Congo and Equatorial Guinea from total of 41 entries from 17 African countries, also including Namibia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, Zimbabwe, RD Congo, Ghana, Mali, Kenya, and Mozambique.

Three other projects have been specially invited to participate, two form Spain but focusing on African stories and with African authors or protagonists and one documentary project from Egypt, due to the special relevance of this winter peaceful revolution there for the entire region and continent.

Selected feature-length projects (fiction):

  • Mettou Abderrahmane Sissako, Mauritania, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abderrahmane_Sissako
  • The Boda Boda Thieves, Donald Mugisha / Jamie Tayler, Uganda, South Africa http://www.powerofculture.nl/en/current/2008/September/mugisha
  • And Then The Rains Return, Yemane I. Demissie, Ethiopia, http://www.ethiopianfilminitiative.org/component/content/article/36-ethiopian-filmmakers/201-yemane-demissie?directory=60
  • Le Ntih, Narcisse Wandji, Cameroon

Selected documentaries:

  • Un Día Vi 10.000 Elefantes, Pere Ortín, Ramón Esono, Equatorial Guinea, Spain, http://www.10000elefantes.com/
  • Parles a Eux, Maïmuna Ndiaye, Burkina Faso
  • Cenizas del Perdón, Gilbert Ndunga Nsangata, Congo, Spain, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3382961/,

The organizers have also invited to the forum three projects to enrich the forum by their experiences.

  • Asube (feature length project), Richard Jordan, Spain
  • Citizens of the World (feature-length project), Lexy Uye Usunde, Nigeria, Spain
  • Jeanne d'Arc Masriya (documentary), Iman Kamel, Egypt, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4193284/

Africa Produce received for this year 41 entries (26 feature-length projects and 15 documentaries) from 17 African countries (apart from mentioned above also from Namibia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, Zimbabwe, RD Congo, Ghana, Mali, Kenya, Mozambique). This means doubled number of entries in comparison to the last year forum.

"We would like to thank very much to the participants in the 3rd Africa Produce Forum. We are convinced that we won´t fail their trust. All the participating projects already proved that they deserve to be converted into films, which will represent African continent in the coming years," says Carlos Domínguez, coordinator of the forum.

3rd Africa Produce Forum takes place also thanks to kind support of Spanish Agency for International Development and Cooperation (AECID), Department of Culture of Andalusia and Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA).

About FCAT

African film festival of Tarifa (FCAT - Festival de Cine Africano de Tarifa) is an independent and competitive film festival and one of the biggest African film festivals in Europe. The FCAT celebrates its eighth edition from 11th to 19th June in Andalusian town Tarifa - the closest town of continental Europe to the African continent - the two continents are in fact only 14 km apart from one another in this geographical area.

This year FCAT will screen up over hundred African films and it will bring together some of the most distinguished African filmmakers. Its aim is to spread knowledge about African film production by exhibiting a representative wide variety of audiovisual African works every year: from the classics to more innovative and recent films, from documentaries to feature length fiction films, from South Africa to Morocco and from Senegal to Ethiopia.
