DOUBLE EXPOSURE Investigative Film Festival and Symposium

Double Exposure (DX) is the United States’ first and only film festival dedicated to investigative reporting on film. It pairs four days of film screenings/discussions with a cutting-edge professional symposium that brings together watchdog journalists and filmmakers venturing into investigative storytelling.

Now in its sixth year, DX does more than just identify and celebrate a new genre of filmmaking. It casts this vital body of work toward recognition as a coherent artistic vision. It connects audience appreciation for creative output to the rights of reporters and filmmakers to pursue investigations in the public interest; it ties stirrings of artistic curiosity to practical consequences and groundbreaking storytelling to policy changes.

As DX 2020 approaches, public awareness of investigative reporting’s importance for a vibrant democracy has never been more urgent–particularly in Washington, epicenter of the assault on verifiable truth. As grave as may be the efforts to stifle watchdog journalism, however, there is also light: a rebirth of relentless investigative reporting alongside exciting new forms of storytelling that mix journalism with film, serial podcasts in audio and video, hybrid storytelling, virtual reality–even poetry.

DX returns with a special virtual edition October 14-18.

Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival & Symposium 2020

DX Access

With just eight weeks until Double Exposure, we’re excited to share a preview of the sessions and speakers who will shape our sixth edition.

More workshops, master classes, new investigative films and one-on-one meetings are just the beginning of this year’s virtual program.

Stay tuned for the launch of our full symposium program and film slate in early-September!

2020 has tested our ability to navigate dramatic changes in how we live, connect with our families, earn wages, walk safely and discern truth from lies.  For investigative journalists and filmmakers, long standing challenges have grown in tandem with their role as the public’s eyes and ears, charged with revealing the hidden truths of these extraordinary times.

Double Exposure will meet you there. We have doubled the number of panel discussions, master classes and workshops to provide useful tools and connections for these times.  As an online event, DX2020 offers added flexibility and increased opportunities to connect and engage with a global community of filmmakers and journalists.

With five days, a dozen new investigative films, over 30 panels, workshops and master classes, expect a deep dive with experts on safety and security in the field, interrogations into race and power, fundraising in the age of COVID-19, fact-checking, verifying and incorporating citizen-generated content and more. Hot off the press, we’ll have a new survival guide on contracts for indie filmmakers and freelancers, plus sessions on craft, including podcasting, music scoring, and taking print investigations into film and audio. Both our PRO BONO LEGAL CLINIC and CROSSING BORDERS, two signature programs, are coming back. Learn more about them:

DX ACCESS also returns, providing you with unparalleled face time with funders, producers, festival programmers, distributors, media outlets, reporters, writers and directors.  Get a Full Festival Pass + DX Access to request a series of ten-minute meetings with industry leaders, discuss your career, present an idea, or pitch a project at any stage of development.

To get a taste of the caliber of speakers you can expect at DX this year, see our past guests. The 2020 speakers will be announced with the full program in early September.

See you at Double Exposure!
