IS THIS THE REAL LIFE? IS THIS JUST FANTASY?

Yes, it is real life, or at least a good slice of it. Documentaries shine light to the uncharted and little known. They can be funny, forbidding, inspirational, informative, thoughtful, and eye opening. Regardless of the specific subject matter, all documentaries have one impressive thing in common, the fascinating truth.

From the sweeping heights of skyscrapers to the deep blue sea, we’ve got documentaries about middle aged men in lycralong lost siblings, the delightful world of NZ’s competitive poultry breeders, a beauty with brains, and the elusive art world.

Get a glimpse inside a horror theme park (Spookers!), a brothel (The Pink House), and the fascinating and often confronting intricacies of prisons around the world (Chauka, Please Tell Us the TimePrisoners and Pups).

We have a wide breadth of fascinating factual films. Browse our full documentary slate and filter by the categories of your choosing.

CLOSING NIGHT | GRACE JONES: BLOODLIGHT & BAMI

GRACEJONES.123503.jpg

We kick the fest off with our punk carnivale and close the curtains with a daring disco diva. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is the new documentary from director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology) following the unconventional Jamaican-born model, singer, and New Wave icon.

Filmed over the course of a decade, Jones allows Fiennes intimate access to her offstage persona, as well as dynamite performances filmed during a 2016 concert. We've nabbed this film straight from Toronto International Film Festival where it opened the doc competition.

Don your finest and bring your dancing shoes as we end the fest with a closing night gala party for the ages. There'll be fine wine, finer company and guaranteed good times. Don’t miss this.

SCREEN WORSHIP

The Dressmaker, Red Dog, Romeo + Juliet, Muriel’s Wedding, and Strictly Ballroom are titles that sit on her resume. Jill Bilcock is a pioneer in Australian film and is regarded as one of the world’s great editors.

Director Axel Grigor depicts Bilcock’s fascinating journey from film student to Bollywood film extra whilst perfecting her craft during the infancy of Australia’s film industry. For lovers of screen and the people who work behind it, this one’s for you.

Jill Bilcock: Dancing The Invisible.

PUNK IT UP

111.163511.jpg

Musically inclined? A purveyor of punk?

We have the AUS premiere of Nico, 1988 which follows the Velvet Underground muse long after her glory days.

The Decline of Western Civilization depicts the seedy underground of the American Punk Rock scene with a pulsating mix of live footage and amazingly candid interviews.

Fact & ficton collide in this portrait of the meteoric rise and spectacular implosion of the Sex Pistols in The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. This 35mm special is followed by a Q&A with director Julien Temple.
