Fastnet Film Festival

The Fastnet Film Festival now in its 12th year takes place annually over the last weekend in May. It is an 'up close and personal' festival. Filmmakers, directors, producers and invited guest speakers, all share the same space. Schull doesn’t have a Cinema, so we invite attendees to explore alternatives. Screenings, Q&As, Premieres, Workshops and Discussions are held in all sorts of weird and wonderful locations, throughout the village of Schull. “Distributed Cinema” is Schull’s very own dedicated server for short films. Anyone with a smartphone, laptop or tablet can access the submitted films through Wi-Fi, anywhere on Main Street during the festival. You can watch any of the past 11 years winning films, archived workshops and interviews 24 hours a day 365 days a year here in Schull.

Our server is also used alongside HD media players, to screen films in a number of smaller venues throughout the locality. From a bookshop, Art Gallery, pubs and restaurants, The Long Island Cinema, village hall to our main Hotel venue. Many of the premises in town take on the identity of a cinema, decorating their premises accordingly.

We endeavor to screen each and every film submitted to our competition. It is difficult for filmmakers to reach large audiences and have their work appreciated. Our workshops attempt to provide very high quality hands on experiences for filmmakers. We are also fortunate to live in the most beautiful place in the world. When the sun shines there is no better place to be at any time.

The Festival Fringe Events

At the Fringe, we provide high quality activities for families with children, from Tee-shirt Painting, Children’s Cinema, Storytelling, Drama workshops, children’s filmmaking workshops and much more for all ages Most of our children’s activities do not carry a cover charge.

Please keep an eye on our website for updates. www.fastnetfilmfestival.com

Lenny Abrahamson to Screen ‘Frank’ in Schull at the 7th Corona Fastnet Film Festival in May and Host Q&A

‘Frank’ Irish comedy-drama directed by Lenny Abrahamson, premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. A surreal comedy inspired by the cult musician Frank Sidebottom, played by Michael Fassbender and co starring Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal. ‘Frank’ will be screened at this years Festival that will run from the 20th to the 24th of May in the beautiful seaside town of Schull.

Lenny has just returned from the US having finished shooting his “most challenging film to date” – the screen adaptation of Emma Donoghue's 2010 novel ‘Room’. Lenny will be in attendance to take part in a post-screening Q&A.

Each year, over the last weekend in May, the now five‐day Festival plays host to in excess of 300 short films. The commitment in Schull is to screen all of the short films entered into competition during the festival in as many different venues throughout the village as possible and to have them available on our archive for Wi-Fi viewing on smart devices within the network of Schull. The Fringe will have amazing fun for children of all ages.

Filmmakers, directors, producers and invited industry experts all share their experiences, giving shape and direction to each year’s challenging programme. This Short Film Festival without a Cinema invites you to explore alternatives throughout the village of Schull, providing those who attend with a totally new cinematic experience.

Distributed Cinema is Schull’s very own intranet network dedicated to short film. Films are screened in over 15 venues, from a bookshop to an art gallery, a craft shop to the village hall, numerous local pubs and restaurants. Schull’s network connects, through Ethernet cable and wireless, to its own short film archive on a dedicated server. Anyone with a smartphone, laptop or iPad can also access the server through Wi-Fi anywhere on the main street and watch any of the 7 years of submission films any time of the day or night. Visitors can also take a short ferry ride to the Long Island cinema to watch submission shorts and enjoy a corona.

Many more exciting contributors to the festival are yet to be announced.
