THE VOICE OF A WOMAN (VOW) will be hosting its international VOICE OF A WOMAN TALKS SERIES at the Cannes Film Festival this year (Friday May 11th – 12pm – @Plage45)  featuring Los Angeles based film director Nina Menkes (The Bloody Child, Phantom Love, Dissolution) in conversation with journalist Liza Foreman (Variety, New York Times, Film Francais, Hollywood Reporter).

Following on the heels of her hit article which went viral on facebook and was named FILMMAKER’s #1 most popular post of 2017: http://filmmakermagazine.com/104175-the-20-most-popular-posts-of-2017/
NINA MENKES will present her acclaimed cinematic talk, “Sex and Power; The Visual Language of Oppression”, in which she discusses how the recent tidal wave of sexual abuse and assault revelations connects directly to the visual language of cinema.

Menkes will show iconic film clips from the 1940’s through the present to support her compelling argument.  Followed by a conversation with  journalist Liza Foreman. Talk is presented by The Voice of a Woman.

THE VOICE OF A WOMAN was first established in London in 2009, screening the works of women filmmakers from around the world and presenting live conversations with women directors, writers, producers, creatives, technicians, and talent.

Over the years THE VOICE OF A WOMAN has morphed in to THE VOICE OF A WOMAN FILM FESTIVAL & AWARDS in New York with founding sponsor HBO.  Each year the festival features the works of women film directors from around the world and closes with THE VOICE OF A WOMAN AWARD with among its recipients: Shirin Neshat, Kim Longinotto, Darnell Martin, Sarah Gavron, Shola Lynch, Deeyah Khan, The Mundo Sisters, Alison Owen, Faye Ward, Grace Jones, Sylvia Syms, Thandie Newton, and others.

ABOUT NINA MENKES
Nina Menkes is one of America’s most respected filmmakers. Her films are uncompromising in structure and scope, blending a powerful feminist sensibility and aesthetic to make complex, compelling narratives that often explore the intersection between sexuality and violence. She counts among her many admirers such independent film luminaries as Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), Gus Van Sant (Elephant) and Benecio Del Toro (Che).

EOS WORLD FUND and  BUFFALO 8 MANAGEMENT

Eos World Fund is a new global initiative spearheaded by Director/Producer Gwen Wynne that supports innovative female filmmakers. The mission of EOS is to provide financing and distribution to visionary woman filmmakers with bold ideas that challenge perceptions and push the boundaries of the creative and visual arts. EOS will provide a platform to bring these projects to a worldwide audience. The EOS World Fund awarded its first recipients, trailblazing filmmakers Nina Menkes and Julie Dash, in January 2018.

"One of The Eos World Fund’s missions is to change  the entrenched landscape of cinema. Nina Menkes's vital cinematic presentation:  Sex & Power: The Visual Language of Oppression inspires audiences to see why it is urgent to change how women are portrayed in cinema."                                                                                                              --EOS creator Gwen Wynne.

To take photographs means...putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on a single axis...a means of understanding, which cannot be separated from other forms of visual expression. It is a way of shouting, of freeing oneself, not of proving or asserting one's originality.
It is a way of life."
--Henri Cartier-Bresson
