New Ric Roman Waugh’s film KANDAHAR announced starring Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler (Greenland, London Has Fallen, Olympus Has Fallen, 300) is set to star in Ric Roman Waugh’s (Greenland, Angel Has Fallen) new action thriller Kandahar. Waugh will direct from a screenplay he wrote with former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune.

The film is being produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, G-BASE’s Alan Siegel and Gerard Butler, and Capstone Group’s Christian Mercuri. Rob Moran will Executive Produce along with Brendon Boyea and Jonathan Fuhrman.  Thunder Road acquired the highly sought-after original screenplay from LaFortune in 2016, which is based on LaFortune’s experiences at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Afghanistan at the time of the Snowden leaks.

The film continues the oeuvre of production powerhouse Thunder Road, also the producer of the John Wick and Sicario franchises, in bringing high intensity action to character-based stories.  In this film, Butler stars as Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative working in the Middle East. An intelligence leak dangerously exposes his classified mission and reveals his covert identity. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.

Principal photography will take place on location in the Middle East.

Capstone is co-financing the project and handling international sales on the highly anticipated film.  They will present the project to buyers at the upcoming Virtual Cannes market.

CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and is representing the film’s U.S. rights.

Kandahar marks a reunion for Butler, Waugh, Iwanyk and Siegel, who most recently teamed on STX’s upcoming thriller Greenland, set for a wide theatrical release.  Waugh also directed Butler in Angel Has Fallen, the follow-up to Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, which Butler produced and have collectively earned nearly $400 million worldwide.

"It's rare to find the combination of such undeniable talent like we have on Kandahar with Gerard, Alan, Ric and Basil.  Add in an amazing action script and you have a feature film that sets the bar very high. I am delighted to work with the whole Kandahar team and to bring this film to the marketplace," highlighted Mercuri.

“We are so thrilled to be able to bring the Greenland band back together again. Mitch’s script has always been a jewel in our slate, and to have this team bring it to life is a dream come true for us,” commented Iwanyk.

Ric Roman Waugh most recently directed Greenland and Angel Has Fallen.  Prior to those films, he produced, wrote, and directed the harrowing prison thriller Shot Caller, starring Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.  This followed him writing and directing the thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Michael K. Williams, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal and Melina Kanakaredes for Participant Media and Summit Entertainment. Snitch also offered a pointed look at the United States’ draconian mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Prior to that, Waugh helmed the critically acclaimed film Felon, from his own screenplay for Sony. He also produced and directed the critically hailed documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, released by Participant Media/Takepart. The documentary follows two Special Forces soldiers as they grapple with PTSD upon their return to the United States. Since its nationwide tour, where countless vets stood up and asked for help after watching the doc’s message, the Veteran Affairs has made Waugh’s documentary part of its official doctrine to help veteran’s return.

Butler is repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment. Waugh is repped by WME and Tara Kole at Gang Tyre.
