La Journée By The Land: May 13th 2019

Lillian and I had the pleasure of attending La Journée by the Land’s pre-opening event last night. We weren’t exactly what was in store for us, however, sometimes that’s the best way to go into things. La Journée by the Land markets itself as “the first sustainable and organic venue in Cannes during the festival.” When we arrived, we walked out onto a rooftop terrace through an arch made of various foliage and lights that made us feel we had just walked into a real life fairy tale.  From this rooftop venue, we could see the Mediterranean, the hills, and the Carlton hotel, all bathed in golden light. We were then immediately offered caviar and our choice of drinks. The director of the space personally greeted us and made sure we had everything we could ever need. There were a variety of specialty drinks being offered at their bar and they all came with a bamboo straw as opposed to a plastic one, sticking to their mission of being completely sustainable and eco-friendly. All the lights were powered by solar panels, and there was no plastic in sight. There was a booth offering “raw” snacks, organic and free from dairy, gluten, and even baking.  They had a fresh spring rolls and several choices of cakes, all made right in front of us As the sun started to set and more guests started to arrive, we were asked to take our seats for dinner. Each table was set beautifully, complete with live plants for centerpieces. The atmosphere was very relaxed and open, allowing people to talk and meet each other. One of the women at the table next to us proudly proclaimed that this was her 28th year attending the Cannes Film Festival. The first course was a dorade ceviche that was light and fresh;a perfect start to the meal as it didn’t leave you feeling full, only refreshed. The second course was a black truffle risotto that was  one of the best I have ever eaten. It was rich yet not overpowering, and very satisfying. By the time I finished it, I was pleasantly full and in a wonderful mood. The last course was dessert, which was a deconstructed take on a strawberry shortcake with a lemon zest whipped cream atop slices of fresh strawberries, dusted with a strawberry powder and fresh mint. Like the ceviche, it too left you felt feeling refreshed, creating a perfect equilibrium in the meal. Overall, this night was the perfect way to start off the festival: with good food, drinks, company, and the most gorgeous space imaginable. I strongly suggest that if you are attending the Cannes Film Festival over these next two weeks, that you make your way to La Journée by the Land. You will not be disappointed.
