First LIVE Q&A: UniFrance Discussion Series focusing on the new challenges of sales and distribution

Unifrance Films

New Realities for film: 7 weekly workshops to discuss challenges and opportunities that could shape the future of film

Discussion #1: THE NEW CHALLENGE OF SALES AND DISTRIBUTION

What is the short-term and long-term impact of the current crisis on acquisitions and distribution strategies?

Sales and distribution companies had already been through a few years of digital disruption and many were exploring new models when the virus struck. And they were among the most impacted with stark choices needing to be made about films they had acquired, rapid shifts in marketing strategies and with key markets, including the Cannes Market, shifting online. The experience of online-only release has been challenging but may offer big lessons for the future shape of their business. There have also been potential opportunities emerging in markets, where the lack of US blockbusters has left gaps. This panel will look at lessons learned but will focus on the structure and support needed for a new ecosystem.

Talk about a "new normal" began very early into the Covid-19 crisis and every part of the film value chain has certainly been forced to make severe adjustments. Cinemas have closed, productions halted and sales and distribution companies forced into tough decisions about postponing theatrical releases or taking a chance with online release. VOD channels, particularly subscription services, have been reporting major growth.

We may be heading towards a changed ecosystem for film with significant long-term consequences. UniFrance believes that the future should be shaped through dialogue, cooperation and collaboration across the industry.

The mentioned above series of 7 online workshops will take a broad perspective, talking to some of the most experienced and thought-provoking people in the business. And it will encourage participation from across the sector. The aim will be to find opportunities in the new realities we will all face.
