Based on Luigi Pirandello's play, the movie is set in a castle where the owner’s uncle, deranged after a fall from a horse, has lived for twenty years under the illusion that he is the German Emperor Henry IV. His relatives use various plays to make him recover his wits or to unmask his pretence. But Henry becomes, even more determined to withdraw from the world forever.

From the homonymous drama of Čechov. Nina and Costantino are two young eager for success and glory. He aspires to become a theatrical author, also to be able to win the heart of Nina who would like to be an actress. But for both there will be only failures, pains and deaths.
Bellocchio gives a very personal rendition of Čechov's drama and, thanks to Agosti's editing and a great cast performances, reaches outstanding results. Laura Betti's character is different from the original one but so powerful to steal the scene. Location and Nicola Piovani's score added to the film a unique atmosphere.
Not just a meditation about art, but on human condition, love and meaning of life.

The director Marco Bellocchio returns with his family to his homeland, in the province of Piacenza. The journey is an opportunity to confront oneself with one's past, as well as with nostalgia for an era. The past returns to Marco even in dreams: a boy hides in the river until night after stealing fruit; masons return home from work in the evening, singing a famous song. At the end Marco enters in a tunnel to find a way out of his own irresolution, exchanging psychic reality for material reality, coming out alive: a little bit euphoric but with the same problems before.

Country: Italy, 1980
