CANNES FILM FESTIVAL POSTPONED BUT DIVERSE FILMMAKERS FIND SILVER LINING

On the day the world was scheduled to witness the opening ceremonies of the 73rd Festival de Cannes, Yolonda Brinkley, creator of Diversity in Cannes, the independent movement promoting inclusion at the Cannes Film Festival, is pleased to announce the official selections of the 2020 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase and its Cannes Conversations, a twelve day virtual series highlighting Cannes Film Festival Alums. With the goal of lifting filmmaker spirits during these unprecendented times, she hopes the announcement will inspire creativity and encourage the continued pursuit of dreams, amidst such global uncertainty.

"As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on millions of lives worldwide, causing the postponement of the 73rd Festival de Cannes and our independent  Diversity Day programming, I was reluctant to announce the 2020 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase official selections. In fact, while we battle this global pandemic, I remain uncertain about the timeliness of our news; especially without confirmation of a new date," comments Yolonda Brinkley of Diversity in Cannes. "However, despite its appearance, these 18 diverse filmmakers, giving voice to marginalized populations through their stories, deserve recognition and have waited months for this opportunity. I wholeheartedly believe there's power in celebrating in the midst of the storm and am delighted to share this exciting news, as a silver lining for our global film family."

Created to ensure marginalized voices and underrepresented filmmakers are seen, heard and celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival, the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase is presented by American Publicist and Event Producer, Yolonda Brinkley, with support from Academy Award Winner Viola Davis and Julius Tennon's JuVee Productions, Midian Films and Digital Slang.

Selected by a 40 member global screening committee of diverse entertainment industry professionals and film enthusiasts, from 324 submissions representing 31 countries including Australia, China, Cuba, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Finland, Ghana, Jamaica and Japan, the following 18 films will be screened at an independent event in France, concurrent with the 73rd Festival de Cannes, assuming confirmation of a future 2020 date. Based on this assumption, final winners will be selected onsite by an esteemed international jury and announced at an awards reception immediately following the screening. Included in the prize package, created with filmmaker growth and development in mind, are mentor meetings with industry executives including Elon Johnson, Tyler Perry Studios, CBS Entertainment Diversity's Tiffany Smith Anoa'i, Talent Agents Tracy Christian and Clair Best as well as 2015 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase Winner, Director Pete Chatmon.

Given the fluidity of the global pandemic, the organization's immediate plan is to stay home in hopes of flattening the corona curve and to align with the execution strategy of the Cannes Film Festival, monitoring the crisis, considering contingency plans and providing updates as appropriate.

In closing, Brinkley adds, "As a woman of faith, I'm believing God for supernatural healing and full restoration of our emotional, financial and physical health. I am cautiously optimistic that we will safely convene on the Croisette in Cannes in celebration of life and of marginalized voices globally. In the interim, on the day the world was scheduled to witness the opening ceremonies of the 73rd Festival de Cannes, I am delighted to announce the official selections of the 2020 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase, with the goal of lifting filmmaker spirits during these unprecendented times.
