Cannes Market Dailies

With over 2000+ short films present at the Cannes Short Film Corner, we have narrowed the list down to a few shorts attending the Cannes Court Metrage and are definitely worth the watch and probably picked up by the buyers. Here’s a quick look at these short films:

Finding My Lebanon (Mark Abouzeid)

An interesting film about seasoned director Mark Abouzeid’s personal discovery of finding his Lebanese roots.

After the death of his father, Abouzeid was determined to learn more about his heritage. He traveled to Lebanon to learn more about the country, it’s culture and it’s church, as seen through the eyes of his father.

Interview With a Director (Ivana Noa)

Mokhallad Rasem has been born in war, has survived two other wars, has lived in a bunker all of his childhood. Though the inspiration of his father and family have driven him to study and become one of the most prospective young theater directors in Belgium.

Director Ivana Noa has declared that her inspiration to create "Interview with a Director" stemmed from her personal feelings regarding the harmful nature of war for everyone involved.

My Forelove (Mor Dovrat)

The story revolves around the two main characters meeting for sex without knowing anything about each other or the life of the other person. The plot is unique not only as an original take on a traditional love story but also because it combines facts from the real lives of the cast and director and blends them with fictional elements.

Dovrat leaves it up to the viewer to determine which aspects of the film are fact...and which are fiction.

Scribblings (Oscar Barby)

First time filmmaker, Oscar Barby (writer and director) offers this short psychological thriller about a struggling writer who takes in a sexy lodger to help pay the bills. The lodger slowly starts to move in on his life and their relationship begins to spin out of control.

It first opened in festivals and Kenya, Nigeria and Johannesburg and has finally made its way to Cannes.

Surviving International Boulevard (Sian Taylor Gowan)

“Surviving” follows one woman’s plight to get her daughter off the streets in Oakland, California. The film packs and abundance of raw truth and emotion into every single scene that allows it to leave a heavy impact on its viewers like a full-length documentary film would. This also marks Sian Taylor Gowan’s debut in directing and in production.

Black Movie Night (Sterling Milan)

Sterling Milan’s film touches on the recent protests of the Oscars.

First-time actor Akintola Jiboyewa and Sheria Irving (The Good Wife, Romeo & Juliet) decide to celebrate a night of black cinema instead of the Oscars and are caught between their right to protest the lack of diversity and their own ambitions. Everyone can follow his or her dreams with this film.

Roots (Hasti Saadi)

SynopsisThis documentary has been made by honest conversations between a young Afghan and an Iranian boy who works in a garden. They talk about various sensitive subjects: love, God, and their dreams.

They live in parallel worlds, yet these two young boys personality and views can easily harmonize as one.

Bodas (Alexia Maltner)

Bodas, a Portuguese title which translates to "Between Them" in English, is a 12-minute short film written by screenwriter Renata Mizrahi and director Alexia Maltner.

On her 50 years wedding anniversary day with Caio, Dora decides to act guided by her true desire. A desire that will change the course of their lives.

Myrto and Kimon are an elderly childless couple. Their lives, revolving around everyday things is shuttered when their pet dog Lucy dies out of natural causes.

The day they take her to the vet for the last time, they found themselves all alone having to deal with his guilt, her void, and their love.

A Little Something (Brett Eichenberger)

Award-winning filmmaker Brett Eichenberger’s latest short film, A Little Something, will make its debut at the Cannes Short Film Corner this May during the 69th annual Cannes International Film Festival.

A Little Something follows Douglas, a time-travelling salesman who is about to make the most significant sale of his life. The only thing standing in his way is himself. The short film stars Dan Gilvary, Brenda Arteaga-Walsh, and Ross Nathan.

The Last Show (Roberto Flores)

Jorge works as a clown in a small circus. Being a clown is all he knows and wants to be for the rest of his life. Suddenly, one day his boss informs him he will have to sell the circus due to the small audiences they have.

This news will make Jorge fight in order to prevent the circus being sold.
