Everybody Knows (Todos Lo Saben) by Asghar Farhadi to open the competition of the 71st Festival de Cannes

everybody knows - Poster

This year’s forthcoming Festival de Cannes will open with a screening of Asghar Farhadi's new film Everybody Knows (Todos Lo Saben) in competition, at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in the Palais des Festivals on Tuesday 8 May.

Asghar Farhadi's 8th feature film, shot entirely in Spanish on the Iberian Peninsula, charts the story of Laura, who lives with her husband and children in Buenos Aires. When they return together to her native village in Spain for a family celebration, an unexpected event changes the course of their lives. The family, its ties and the moral choices imposed on them lie, as in every one of Farhadi’s scripts, at the heart of the plot.

The last time the Opening Film was neither in English nor in French was for Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education in 2004.

This psychological thriller stars Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem from Spain and Ricardo Darín from Argentina. As usual, Asghar Farhadi also surrounds himself with a first-class team: José Luis Alcaine on photography (a regular collaborator of Pedro Almodóvar, Carlos Saura and Bigas Luna), costume designer Sonia Grande (Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen, The Others by Alejandro Amenábar), and Iranian editor Hayedeh Safiyari, continuing a long and fruitful collaboration with the director after working together on four of his feature films, including his two Oscar-winning films.

Over the past decade, Asghar Farhadi has quickly established himself as one of Iran's most influential and internationally recognised filmmakers, both for his tense and carefully crafted scripts and for the virtuosity of his realism in directing. At the Berlinale, A Separation (2011) garnered the Golden Bear, as well as the Golden Globe, César and Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Farhadi then entered the Official Selection at Cannes with The Past (2013, Best Actress for Bérénice Bejo) and The Salesman (2016, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shahab Hosseini), which also won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

The Opening Ceremony to be held on May, 8th, will be broadcast free-to-air by Canal +, as well as in partner cinemas and followed by the preview screening of Everybody Knows in selected theatres in France.

Everybody Knows is produced by Memento Films Production (Alexandre Mallet-Guy) and Morena Films (Álvaro Longoria). The international sales are handled by Memento Films International and the French distribution by Memento Films. It will be released on Wednesday, May 9, in French cinemas.

The 71st Festival de Cannes will be held from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 19 May. The Competition Jury will be chaired by Cate Blanchett. The composition of the Official Selection will be announced on Thursday, April 12 and will be published live on our social media sites. Stay tuned!

Memento Films Distribution will release EVERYBODY KNOWS on 9 May in 350 theatres.

EVERYBODY KNOWS was entirely shot in Spain and in Spanish with Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and the Argentinian actor Ricardo Darín as main characters. Spanish actors Eduard Fernández, Bárbara Lennie and Inma Cuesta also star in the film.

The psychological thriller follows Laura who travels with her family from Buenos Aires to the village where she was born, on a Spanish vineyard, to attend her sister’s wedding but unexpected events lead this gathering towards a crisis which exposes the hidden past of the family.

Asghar Farhadi collaborated with great names of Spanish cinema including Jose-Luis Alcaine as DOP and Sonia Grande as costume designer, both regulars in Pedro Almodovar’s filmography. Clara Notari, known for WILD TALES and Soderbergh’s CHE, supervised the production design. The editing of the film was helmed by Hayedeh Safiyari who already worked with Asghar Farhadi on A SEPARATION and THE SALESMAN.

After THE SALESMAN and THE PAST, EVERYBODY KNOWS is the third consecutive film by Asghar Farhadi produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy from Memento Films Production. The French producer collaborated with Spanish producer Alvaro Longoria from Morena Films. Lucky Red and Rai Cinema in Italy, France 3 Cinéma in France and Untitled Films AIE in Spain are also co-producers of the project. The film is supported by ICAA, Canal +, France Télévisions, Eurimages Ciné +, Movistar, Cofinova and Indéfilms.

“This is Asghar Farhadi’s most ambitious film yet,” explains Alexandre Mallet-Guy. “EVERYBODY KNOWS is not only a gripping thriller with multiple twists, but also an amazing ensemble portrait dominated by the performances of Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín. Moving from Tehran to the Spanish countryside, Asghar Farhadi has lost none of his incredible talent as an observer of the human soul, which twice earned him the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film for A SEPARATION in 2012 and THE SALESMAN in 2017. Combining suspense and emotion within a tense narrative, EVERYBODY KNOWS is sure to find Farhadi his widest audience yet. We are very proud to be presented both at the opening and the competition in the upcoming Cannes Film Festival."

Universal Pictures International will release the film in Spain in September under the title TODOS LO SABEN.

Memento Films International handles international sales. The film is already widely sold internationally: Germany and Austria (Prokino), Latin America (Leda Films), Japan (Longride), Benelux (Cineart), China (Hi-Show), Greece (Seven), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Hungary (Mozinet), Israel (Lev), Poland (Gutek), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Aero Films), Russia and the Baltics (Mauris Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Switzerland (Frenetic), Taiwan (Movie Cloud), Turkey (Zeyno Films) and former Yugoslavia (Megacom).
