Applause and Fighter Jet Fly-by for Tom Cruise on the red capet

Who would have thought that a sequel delayed 36 years could put an actor pushing sixty back on top of the heap?  This is precisely what "Top Gun, Maverick" is doing for actor Tom Cruise.  Which is not to say that Cruise has been out of the limelight for any great length of time, but some recent films have not been as successful as his earlier megahits, and his outspoken association with the pseudoreligion  known as Scientology has earned him a substantial negative following.
"Top Gun, Maverick" is a direct sequel to "Top Gun", 1986, in which Cruise (at age 23) starred as  Lieutenant  Pete "Maverick' Mitchell, a rebellious  hotshot fighter pilot in an elite Naval fighter squadron. That film had some incredible flying acrobatics, became a huge hit worldwide,  and made Cruise into an instant superstar.
In the current followup, after more than thirty years as one of the navy's top fliers, Pete Mitchell, still only a captain and still a maverick, is a courageous test pilot trying to dodge the advancenent  in rank that would ground him.  He will accompany a group of his new trainees on an exceedingly dangerous mission.
The sequel has many of the original supporting actors, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly,  et al,  enhancing the credibility of the extended temporal continuity.
Advance  criticism has been highly favorable, going so far as to say that this "tops the original".
True to flashy over the top promotional tradition the festival engaged a small squadron of jet planes to flash by overhead at the red carpet premiere of the film as an ecstatic Cruise observed from below.
