PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL & FILM MARKET

The Palm Springs International ShortFest, Short Film Festival & Film Market, celebrated as one of the most acclaimed short film showcases in the world, will take place at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs June 19 - 25, 2012. Film submissions are now being accepted through April 6, 2012.

The Palm Springs International ShortFest, Short Film Festival and Film Market, now entering its 18th year, is the largest showcase of short films in North America. With over 300 films from more than 40 countries screened annually, the Festival is truly a world-class event. Each year over two-thirds of the films presented at the Festival are acquired by distributors, networks or on -line companies, or find sales agents. Festival winners are eligible for Oscar® consideration in the Short Film categories for Live Action, Animation and Best of the Fest categories. Since the Festival's inception, over 80 short films from our Festival have gone on to win Oscar® Nominations.

Executive Director Darryl Macdonald said, "The Festival and its associated Film Market is ranked the largest in North America. It is also consistently noted as one of the most filmmaker friendly and finest organized short film festivals in the World. Over the course of the Festival's first 11 years, 49 films from our line-up went on to become Academy Award nominees. Our Short Film Market, which runs during the Festival, encompasses over 2,200 new short films and viewing facilities for attending industry, press and filmmakers.

Last year's ShortFest drew almost 15,000 attendees, including over 500 filmmakers, press and industry buyers and representatives and is truly a world-class event. Each year over two-thirds of the films presented at the Festival are acquired by distributors, networks or online companies, or find sales agents. In addition to attracting the top North American and European distributors and sales agents of short films, agents, studio and specialty-channel representatives attend the Festival in search of the next generation of writers and directors.

Competition:

ShortFest is a competitive Film Festival. Films accepted are automatically eligible for the applicable competition category. ShortFest prioritizes premiere status when selecting films for competition. All films accepted are considered
for the Audience Award. A Jury comprised of filmmakers and industry representatives will screen all competition finalists, deliberate and announce the results at Awards Night on Sunday evening. Filmmakers not present will be notified in writing. Winning films will be screened again for audiences on Monday.
Prints and tapes will not be released from the festival until the winning films have been announced.

Awards:

1) There will be a total of twenty (20) awards presented including: Best Animation; Best Live Action (15 minutes and under); Best Live Action (over 15 minutes); Best Documentary; Best Student Cinematography; Best Student Animation; Best Student Live Action (15 minutes and under); Best Student Live Action (over 15 minutes) and Best Student Documentary. In addition, there is a Grand Jury Award and a Future Filmmaker Award.

2) All first and second place winners will receive awards. In total, over $70,000 in cash, film stock and production services will be awarded. All first place winners in the Live Action and Animation categories will also become eligible for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for possible Academy Award nomination except as noted below.

*Please note:
A first place winner does not represent automatic Academy consideration: It takes the place of qualifying screenings. The Academy is notified of the winning entries. It is the responsibility of the filmmaker to contact the Academy
for all details, and to request a submission form. Academy contact information will be made available to the winning filmmakers by the festival, or can be found by visiting http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/%20rule19.html
