From console to the big screen: the movies gamers need to watch

If you love nothing more than shutting the door at the end of a busy week and powering up your PC or Playstation for some gaming, then you're sure to love this movie line-up. From classic retro video games from yesterday to brand-new animated characters and a more serious look at gaming culture, there's something for everyone.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The new Super Mario Bros. Movie came out this year and was a big hit with old and new fans alike. It included loads of clever references to features and characters in the popular video game. The movie was produced by Illumination Entertainment, most widely known for films like Despicable Me and Minions, in partnership with Nintendo and Universal Pictures.

The ensemble voice cast stars big names like Chris Pratt (Mario) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) as they battle against Jack Black (Bowser) and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong) in an exciting adventure to find Charlie Day (Luigi) and save the Mushroom Kingdom.

Free to Play: The Movie

If you're a fan of esports and want to take a deep dive into the industry and see how it works, then Free to Play: The Movie is a great place to start. It's a documentary film, following three professional video game players from around the world as they compete in the most lucrative esports tournament of the day, hosted by Valve Corporation called the first International. The movie follows each player and sheds light on their lives and challenges as they compete to be the best in the world.

The movie has wider themes too, namely how video game culture has developed over the last few decades and how it has become an integral part of mainstream culture. Whether this is a good or a bad thing, you'll have to watch the film and decide for yourself. An oldie but a goodie, Free to Play: The Movie was released in Spring 2014.

Ready Player One

Based on the 2011 science fiction novel of the same name and written by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One came out as a movie adaptation in 2018. The story follows protagonist Wade Watts on his search for an Easter egg in a worldwide virtual reality game – if he can only find it, then he can inherit the fortune of the game's designer and escape his life of poverty.

Along the way, he meets various goodies and baddies in the virtual world and encounters plenty of 1980s gaming culture references that veteran gamers will appreciate. It's a fascinating look at the merging of reality and imagination – a great watch whether you're a professional gamer or have just started playing video games.
