WIFT Germany, WIFT Nordic and the Swedish Film Institute hosted the panel : Closing the Gap

With the launch of SPEAK UP, the European film industry is determined to take positive and practical steps to change the culture of our workplaces and to ensure that every victim of harassment is given the power to make their voice heard.

WIFT Germany, WIFT Nordic and the Swedish Film Institute hosted the panel “Closing the Gap: A Seminar With Creatives and Financiers on How to Take Action Towards 50/50 by 2020”, during which SPEAK UP was announced.

Jean-Christophe Simon, CEO of Berlin based Films Boutique and President of Europa International, introduced the initiative, which was first conceived during the Europa International conference in Bucharest, Romania last November. “It is our duty as managers and CEOs of sales companies to provide a safe environment in which everybody has the opportunity to exchange and speak up. As we are by definition working cross-borders, we wanted to create something beyond borders, a space where it is possible to speak up no matter in which country or festival we currently are.”

Dir. Malgorzata Szumowska, who is presenting her latest film Mug, in competition at the Berlinale (sold by Memento Films International, also a member of Europa International), read out the campaign’s manifesto, available for all to see on the SPEAK UP website. She said of SPEAK UP: “This initiative is important for me as the mother of a five-year-old girl. I want a different environment for her in the future, one in which she feels more comfortable than I did,” before adding “I’m also thinking about all of those women who are afraid to talk out loud about what has happened to them. I believe this kind of action can change a lot.”

Daniela Elstner, currently representing the competition entry Touch Me Not amongst other titles presented by her company at the Berlinale, finished the presentation with information on the SPEAK UP website — www.speakupnow.eu — a platform through which victims or witnesses of sexual harassment can report misconduct and receive legal advice when needed.

For Elstner,“it is time for us all to unite under the same banner to proactively combat systemic sexual harassment and power imbalances. We need to stand together to create a safe environment so that we can focus on what brought us all here in the first place: our common love of Art and Cinema.“

With this launch, now comes a duty to take concrete steps to pave the way for a brighter, safer future. SPEAK UP intends to offer positive support with workshops and panels in the following months and in festivals to come to effectively engage members of the industry on the subject of harassment and abuse.
