Following its award at the Gdynia Film Festival (Young Jury Award for Best Film) and its success at the Slamdance Film Festival, Kuba Czekaj’s new film, THE ERLPRINCE, will be screened in European Premiere at the BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL which takes place from 9 to 19 February 2017.

After the award-winning BABY BUMP screened at the Venice Film Festival – Biennale College in 2015, THE ERLPRINCE (Krolewicz Olch) is the second feature by Polish director Kuba Czekaj. The film will be screened in the Generation 14plus competition at the Berlinale.

THE ERLPRINCE is the story of an exceptionally gifted teenage boy who has just started studying physics at university. He is working on the theory of parallel worlds, which he initially believes to be linked by light. He has an extraordinary mind and a wounded soul, which his authoritarian Mother, who steers his life, is incapable of healing. Then a Man appears in their lives and, as the Boy passes from the hands of the Mother into his care, a new order is established. Their torturous road forms a bond between the three central characters, but their shared happiness is not to last long. Approaching a solution to the problem of the passage between the worlds, the Boy initiates a journey, setting his life on the scales…

THE ERLPRINCE stars Staszek Cywka, Agnieszka Podsiadlik, Sebastian Łach, Bernhard Schütz, Bogusława Jantos, Emilia Stachurska, James Fordham and Anna Podolak.

The film is produced by Studio Munka-Stowarzyszenie and Filmowców Polskich in co-production with Telewizja Polska, Odra Film, Studio Produkcyjne Orka and co-financed by Polish Film Institute.

Born in Wrocław in 1984, Kuba Czekaj graduated in directing from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty at the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2010 and from the Development Lab Feature Programme at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw in 2011. He received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage on two occasions, in 2009 and 2011, and has been honoured with the title of Third Programme Talent, a  distinction conferred by Polish Radio’s Trojka (Third Programme). He has won the Gazeta Wyborcza (Electoral Gazette) Worth cultural award and the Cultural Guarantee award from TVP Kultura, the Polish public television broadcasting corporation’s cultural channel. He also holds the Rector of the University of Silesia's award for active students and doctoral candidates.

He directed two award-winning short films DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK ROOM and TWIST & BLOOD. His debut feature BABY BUMP premiered at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, winning the Queer Lion Award Special Mention, and won the Award for Artistic Achievement at Outfest in Los Angeles. Kuba’s latest feature THE ERLPRINCE had been presented in the main competition at Gdynia Film Festival, winning the Young Jury Award for Best Film.  The film will have its North American premiere at Slamdance Film Festival and European premiere at the forthcoming Berlinale.
