Production begins on Sleeping Dogs - New film starring Russell Crowe and Karen GillanKaren Gillan (upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Avengers: Endgame), Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Harry Greenwood (The Nightingale) and Thomas M. Wright (Universal Pictures’ Everest) join Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) in the crime thriller Sleeping Dogs, the Nickel City Pictures film adaptation of E.O. Chirovici’s critically acclaimed novel, The Book of Mirrors.
Adam Cooper & Bill Collage (Assassins Creed, Exodus: Gods and Kings) adapted the novel, which marks Cooper’s directorial debut. Mark Fasano of Nickel City Pictures produces Sleeping Dogs alongside Cooper, Collage, Deborah Glover and Pouya Shabazian of New Leaf Literary. Matthew Goldberg, Cliff Roberts, Highland Film Group’s Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier and Ford Corbett executive produce.
Principal photography on Sleeping Dogs begins this month in Australia. Nickel City Pictures is partnering with Highland Film Group with worldwide sales continuing at The European Film Market in February.
In the wake of a cutting-edge Alzheimer’s treatment, former homicide detective Roy Freeman (Crowe) is tasked with re-examining a brutal murder case from his past – the grisly murder of a college professor (Csokas). Intrigued and fighting to regain his memory, Roy enlists his former partner to help him revive the investigation. This time though, things unfold very differently when they encounter a magnetic and mysterious woman (Gillan): as he uncovers a tangled web of contradictions and secrets, Roy is forced to face a horrific reality that changes his world forever in the blink of an eye.
Karen Gillan was introduced to worldwide audiences as the adventurous sidekick, Amy Pond in the science fiction series “Doctor Who.” She later went on to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as well as Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and most recently, Thor: Love and Thunder. She has also starred in the hit action-comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and its sequel Jumanji: The Next Level; and most recently Duel, which debuted at Sundance to critical claim and her directorial debut Party’s Just beginning.
Marton Csokas is an established actor with a prestigious career in cinema having worked with the likes of Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson, Darren Aronofsky, Jim Sheridan, and John Madden. Highlights include, Asylum (David McKenzie) with Natasha Richardson and Ian McKellen, Lord of the Rings alongside Cate Blanchett, The Debt with Jessica Chastain, The Equalizer with Denzel Washington, and presently Stephen Williams in Chevalier and Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo. He has worked on Broadway in Parisian Woman with Uma Thurman and Off Broadway with Ivan Van Hove in Little Foxes. He is the recipient of various awards including a Jeffrey Jefferson for Astrov in Uncle Vanya at the Goodman Theatre Chicago (Bob Falls) and an Australian Film Institute award.
Harry Greenwood is an accomplished Australian performer across stage and screen. Harry’s film credits include Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, Carnifex, and The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson. Harry’s TV credits include third season of Bump on Stan, Pieces of Her for Netflix, Total Control, Operation Buffalo, and Wakefield, for which he was nominated for an AACTA for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Drama. Stage productions include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Three Sisters for Sydney Theatre Company, and The Glass Menagerie for Belvoir. He will next be seen in the upcoming drama series The Clearing for Disney+, and Class of ’07 for Amazon Prime.
Thomas M. Wright first came to international attention as an actor in Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake for which he was nominated for a US Critics’ Choice Award. Feature roles include Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest, Cedric Jimenez’ The Man With the Iron Heart and Warwick Thornton’s Sweet Country. Lead roles in US television include Barkskins (Nat Geo), Outsiders (WGN America), and Peabody Award-winning The Bridge (FX). Wright’s debut as writer/director was Acute Misfortune, followed by The Stranger starring Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris which premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2022.
