Mr. Jones press conference: Agnieszka Holland, James Norton, Peter Sarsgaard & Andrea Chalupa

By LINDSAY R. BELLINGER

Agnieszka Holland's newest film Mr. Jones, written by Andrea Chalupa based off of her novel, is a wonderful piece of cinema and a history lesson all rolled up in one. Actors James Norton and Peter Sarsgaard admit that neither of them were aware of Gareth Jones and the truths that he exposed about the widespread famine in the Soviet Union in the 1930s. Norton portrays the Welsh journalist in this well-crafted and dire film that shares a story that was long forgotten in the US and the UK, even to those who may have studied history at university like Sarsgaard. It was fascinating hearing more about how Chalupa created this story around her grandfather's memoir detailing this famine, as her family members were Ukranian refugees who ended up living in refugee camps upon arrival to the United States. It was lovely to see Holland and the rest of her film team speak so passionately about the state of the world and the danger that we live in, especially if journalists are not willing to seek and share the real truths. Holland even mentioned some journalists that she knows back in Poland who create these stories and pawn them off as truths, greatly impacting the way her society functions. Sarsgaard put it simply, that we first lie to ourselves which leads to lieing to others.
