Honorary Golden Bear for Armin Mueller-Stahl

Homage to the Actor at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival

Since 1982 the Berlin International Film Festival has regularly honored outstanding individuals in the world of national and international film for their life's work. In 2010, the festival's Honorary Golden Bear was awarded to Hanna Schygulla, an actress whose career is intimately linked with the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. In 2011, this award is being bestowed on an actor who first won international renown not least because of his role in Fassbinder's LOLA: Armin Mueller-Stahl.

The actor, musician, painter and author, who celebrated his eightieth birthday in December, will be presented with the Honorary Golden Bear on February 18 2011 in the Berlinale Palast. To mark this award, the Berlin International Film Festival will also be showing a number of the most important films from Armin Mueller-Stahl's career.

This tribute will include screenings of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's LOLA (1982) on February 14 and 16, a film for which RWF cast Mueller-Stahl in the male lead alongside Barbara Sukowa.

The series of films will also include East German productions such as KÖNIGSKINDER (ROYAL CHILDREN directed by Frank Beyer, 1961) and DIE FLUCHT (THE FLIGHT directed by Roland Gräf, 1976) as well as the actor's first Hollywood film, MUSIC BOX (1989) directed by Costa-Gavras, and his world-renowned performance as the German taxi driver Helmut Grokenberger in Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH (1991).

Congratulations to Armin Mueller-Stahl on receiving this award!
