Gus Van Sant & Joaquin Phoenix: Don't worry, he won't get far on footOne of the most anticipated films of this year's festival, Don't worry, he won't get far on foot by Gus Van Sant premiered yesterday at the Berlinale Palast, part of this year's festival competition programme. Joaquin Phoenix, who plays John Callahan, a renowned American cartoonist who was bound to a wheelchair after a car accident, became an alcoholic and later on dedicated his life to his art, published in numerous magazines, newpapers and publications. Gus Van Sant adapts and directs the autobiographical novel by John Callahan, masterfully portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, and with Rooney Mara and Jonah Hill in the supporting roles of his hospital consultant and AA mentor respectively. In the press conference for the film, Gus Van Sant spoke about the great emotional journey his character has in the film, "he's always on speed, his life is so fast-paced." Joaquin Phoenix, vividly unimpressed by the press conference, admitted: 'I usually hate film festivals. But went with Gus to the Berlinale talents presentation and I’m really grateful for that experience. Was great to see all those new filmmakers and actors who want to do fresh things.' For his work with the dircetor though, he added: "There are qualities that Gus has like nobody else, he makes you feel really comfortable. Really enjoyed working with him." Text / Photos: Martin I.
