Gerard Butler is in negotiations to star in and Ric Roman Waugh is set to direct Thunder Road and Anton’s disaster thriller GREESTXinternational is handling international distribution. Principal photography to begin May 2019.
Gerard Butler (Den of Thieves, London Has Fallen) is in negotiations to play the lead role in the disaster thriller Greenland about one family’s fight for survival in the face of a cataclysmic natural disaster, re-teaming him with director Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen), it was announced today. Principal photography is set to commence in May in Toronto.
Butler and Waugh most recently collaborated on the upcoming blockbuster Angel Has Fallen, the follow-up to Butler’s Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen franchise, which he produced and has collectively earned nearly $400 million worldwide. Butler is also widely known for lending his voice to the How to Train Your Dragon series that has generated $1.1 billion globally, with the third installment releasing February 22. Most recently, he earned critical praise for his performance in The Vanishing, and produced Them That Follow, which premiered at Sundance.
Greenland is produced by Thunder Road Films Basil Iwanyk (A Star is Born, Sicario, John Wick), who also developed the project, with Butler and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE production company. Anton is fully financing with Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and Harold van Lier executive producing. CAA Media Finance arranged the film’s financing and will represent the project’s domestic rights alongside Anton.
STXinternational, a division of STX Entertainment, is handling international distribution on the highly anticipated film, as well as directly distributing in the UK and Ireland. The company will present the repackaged project to buyers at the upcoming EFM in Berlin.
Ric Roman Waugh recently produced, wrote and directed the harrowing drama Shot Caller, starring Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He wrote and directed the thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Michael K. Williams, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal and Melina Kanakaredes for Participant Media and Summit. Snitch also offered a pointed look at the United States’ draconian mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Prior to that, Waugh helmed the critically acclaimed film Felon, from his own screenplay for Sony. He also produced and directed the critically hailed documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, released by Participant Media/Takepart. The documentary follows two Special Forces soldiers as they grapple with PTSD upon their return to the United States. Since its nationwide tour, where countless vets stood up and asked for help after watching the doc’s message, the Veteran Affairs has made Waugh’s documentary part of its official doctrine to help veteran’s return.
Butler is repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment. Waugh is repped by WME and Tara Kole at Gang Tyre. 09.02.2019 | Berlin's blog Cat. : FILM
