CICAE President Dr Christian Bräuer awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has awarded Christian Bräuer, President of the CICAE - International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas, Chairman of the German AG Kino - Gilde of Art House Cinemas, and Managing Director of Yorck-Kino GmbH, the Order of Merit for his outstanding personal achievements for the common good of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Order of Merit will be presented on 27 February at Kino International by Florian Graf, Head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery.

As chairman of the international and German Arthouse Cinema Associations, Christian Bräuer is committed to the visibility and recognition of cinema as an essential cultural venue and the preservation of a diverse film and cinema landscape in Germany, Europe, and worldwide. His commitment helped to stop the demise of cinemas at the beginning of the century by winning support for arthouse and rural cinemas in the initial digitisation of film projection and for important investments through the Zukunftsprogramm Kino (the Future of Cinema Programme). During the Covid pandemic, he became an essential voice for cinemas and was instrumental in assuring support for these crucial cultural venues to get through this difficult time.

"Christian Bräuer always places his work in a wider context that emphasises the social responsibility of film and cinema. In doing so, he has always kept a focus on cultural diversity, in the countryside as well as in cities and metropolises. Strengthening the exchange between cinemas has been one of his core concerns, not only in times of crisis. Through his visionary work, which always focuses on the further development of cinemas as well as the promotion of young talent and diversity, Christian Bräuer has made a decisive contribution to fostering networks between cinemas on a national and international level - with a special focus on strengthening the Franco-German connection," says Christopher Bausch, board member of AG Kino - Gilde.

About Dr Christian Bräuer:
Christian Bräuer has been president of the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas - CICAE (Confédération Internationale des Cinémas d'Art et d'Essai) since 2019 and Chairman of the German arthouse cinema association AG Kino - Gilde for 15 years.

Christian Bräuer has been managing Yorck-Kino GmbH together with company founder Georg Kloster since 2004. During this time, he has helped to establish the Yorck Kinogruppe as one of the most innovative forces in the European arthouse sector.

Christian Bräuer is a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the German Federal Film Agency FFA, a board member of the European cinema network Europa Cinemas and a member of the plenary meetings of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

Le président de la CICAE, le Dr Christian Bräuer, décoré de l'Ordre du Mérite de la République fédérale d'Allemagne

Le président allemand Frank-Walter Steinmeier a décerné à Christian Bräuer, président de la CICAE - Confédération internationale des cinémas d'art et d'essai, président de l'association allemande AG Kino - Gilde, et directeur général du réseau Yorck-Kino GmbH, l'Ordre du mérite pour ses réalisations personnelles exceptionnelles en faveur du bien commun de la République fédérale d'Allemagne. L'Ordre du mérite sera remis le 27 février au Kino International par Florian Graf, chef de la Chancellerie du Sénat de Berlin.

En tant que président des associations allemande et internationale des cinémas d'art et d'essai, Christian Bräuer se consacre à la visibilité et à la reconnaissance des cinémas en tant que lieux culturels essentiels et à la préservation d'un paysage cinématographique diversifié en Allemagne, en Europe et dans le monde entier. Son engagement a permis d'enrayer le déclin des cinémas au début du siècle en obtenant un soutien pour les cinémas d'art et d'essai et les cinémas ruraux dans le cadre de la numérisation des salles, ainsi que d'importants investissements dans le cadre du Zukunftsprogramm Kino (programme pour l'avenir du cinéma). Pendant la pandémie de Covid, il est devenu une voix essentielle pour les cinémas et a joué un rôle déterminant dans l'obtention d'un soutien pour ces lieux culturels cruciaux afin de traverser cette période difficile.

"Christian Bräuer place toujours son travail dans un contexte plus large qui met l'accent sur la responsabilité sociale du film et du cinéma. Ce faisant, il a toujours porté une attention particulière à la diversité culturelle, que ce soit à la campagne ou dans les villes et les métropoles. Renforcer les échanges entre les cinémas a été l'une de ses principales préoccupations, et pas seulement en temps de crise. Grâce à son travail visionnaire, toujours axé sur le développement des cinémas ainsi que sur la promotion des jeunes talents et de la diversité, Christian Bräuer a contribué de manière décisive au développement des réseaux entre les cinémas au niveau national et international, en mettant l'accent sur le renforcement des liens franco-allemands", a déclaré Christopher Bausch, membre du conseil d'administration de l'AG Kino - Gilde.

Christian Bräuer est président de la Confédération internationale des cinémas d'art et d'essai (CICAE) depuis 2019 et président de l'association allemande des cinémas d'art et d'essai AG Kino - Gilde depuis 15 ans.
