The Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) sets new dates and announces charity purpose

The Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) is a community event that brings Hollywood to The Bahamas, surrounding audiences with a complete film experience, rubbing shoulders with film professionals and the opportunity to network with the who’s who of cinema. BIFF makes the film industry accessible and is open to everyone, while bringing the world to The Bahamas.

BIFF’s 16th anniversary dates are scheduled for December 9 to December 15 with all activities taking place at Baha Mar and venues around Nassau. BIFF will contribute all revenue after expenses towards Hurricane Dorian Relief for Hope Town, Abaco.

Over the years BIFF has expanded the film festival with the BIFF Writers Residency Program, which has been hosted in the Family Islands, as it did last year at Hope Town, Abaco. This year, BIFF films will help to provide moral and material support for Hope Town, Abaco.

In addition, proceeds from BIFF ticket sales will go directly to assisting students affected by Hurricane Dorian with school uniforms, supplies and assistance with school tuition.

“We could not have created the leading film festival in the Caribbean without the support of our loyal sponsors and the Bahamian public”, says Leslie Vanderpool, BIFF’s founder and executive director.
Our mission throughout the years has been to place The Bahamas on the map through cinema and introduce the public to great films, entertain and provide the nuts and bolts of the film industry such as writing, directing, editing, acting, producing and distribution.

“Telling our stories within the region is vital”, she says. “The films at BIFF entertain, bridge cultures and highlight a social purpose.  The social purpose this year is the efforts to assist the hurricane relief drive”

BIFF’s focus has been on four key events:

Film Workshop Outreach — Allows participants to imagine a career in film. BIFF has taught film to 1,000 private and public students, providing training and new skill set in film, enhancing creativity and helping Bahamians dream big.  Program to begin in October for three weeks.

BIFF Writers Residency Program — BIFF’s film professionals have nurtured writers to realize the potential of making a film from script to screen. Program to take place December 9 to 15 in Nassau in honor of Hope Town, Abaco.
