States General of Italian Animation: the revival of the cartoon made in Italy
The commitment of the Italian Government and RAI. Silvia Costa, Chairman of the Culture Committee at the European Parliament: “It’s essential that all media operators guarantee the respect of production quotas”
In March, in Rome, were held the States General of Italian Animation, promoted by Cartoon Italia (the Italian Association of Animation Producers) and ASIFA Italia (the Italian Association of Authors and Animation Professionals) in collaboration with Anica (the National Association of Cinematographic Audiovisual Multimedia Industries).
During the day, both the Italian Institution (the Regulatory Authority for Communication and the Government with the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage) and the European (the Cultural Committee of the European Parliament), along with media companies, audiovisual and film producers and distributors, and broadcasters have brought their contribution to a profound relaunching of the animation industry both at a national and international level. For Animation 2016 will be, as well as for the whole national and international film and audiovisual industry, a crucial year.
In Italy, a new film and audiovisual bill shall provide for the increase of the tax-credit up to 30%, a fund for the development of new audiovisual projects and automatic contributions.
At European level, it’s foreseen the revision of the European Directive on audiovisual media services. “It’s fundamental that all media operators guarantee the respect of European production quotas. Not only through the acquisitions of contents, but also through the co-productions of independent and European producers” says Silvia Costa, Chairman of the Culture Committee at the European Parliament.
The respect of production quotas by broadcasters and other private distribution platforms has been a very hot topic addressed during the States General, an it’s an issue that concerns not only Italy, but the all European animation industry. For this reason, European animation producers will open the dialogue at MIP-TV.
