Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

“Goes to Cannes” series includes works in progress from Annecy

Films in post-production screened at the Marché du Film 2016

The “Goes to Cannes” series is a Works-In-Progress (WIPs) showcase organized by the Marché du Film in partnership with recognized international festivals. Each festival will present up to five films in post-production from their own program to take to Cannes. This selection of film extracts will be presented during two-hour long market screenings, open to Marché du Film badge holders. The team of each WIP will introduce their films. For the 2016 edition, both new regions and an extended selection of genres will be included.

Six festivals are partnering up for the 4th edition: Annecy International Animation Festival, Frontières (Fantasia Film Festival), Los Cabos International Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine Panama, Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara and the Dubai International Film Festival.

For the first time this year, Annecy Goes to Cannes (www.annecy.org) and Frontières Goes to Cannes (www.frontieresmarket.com/en) will take part in the program with respective selections of animation features and genre films from up and coming filmmakers.

“This presentation will be a unique opportunity to scout films coming out from all around the world while using animation, which is not only a technique but also an outstanding industry to work in, with infinite narrative, creative and artistic possibilities! Annecy looks forward to seeing you in Cannes.” Mickaël Marin (Head of Economic Development -Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its Market)

Also new this year, Los Cabos Goes to Cannes (cabosfilmfestival.com) has joined the partnership to share a selection of Mexican films from its “Cabos in Progress” program. Panama Goes to Cannes (iffpanama.org/en/node/925) will also present the award-winning film from its “Primera Mirada” program, focusing on nurturing Central American and Caribbean film projects in progress.

Los Cabos Goes to Cannes will become a partnership with Marché du Film, allowing us to strengthen our role as a trampoline to bold Mexican filmmakers who have the courage to play in the international arena. For four years we have been bringing the best of international industry to Cabos... It's time to bring the best of Cabos to the top markets.” Alonso Aguilar (Director of Cabos International Film Festival)

“For Panama, this participation with Cannes is historic.  To be a launching pad for a cinema that is finding its way to present itself to a world that knows nothing about it is a privilege. We are all writing a new page in the history of world cinema.” Pituka Ortega-Heilbron (Director of Festival internacional de cine Panama)

Dubai Goes to Cannes (dubaifilmfest.com) is also returning this year to showcase the WIPs from the Arab world along with Guadalajara Goes to Cannes (www.ficg.mx/31/index.php/en/) which will present a selection of films from Latin America.

This year's selection of WIPs will be communicated closer to the Festival.

“The idea is to give sales agents and festival programmers the opportunity in Cannes to discover curated selections of Works-In-Progress from different regions, and, this year, to also cast the spotlight on more niche genres such as animation and fantastic/genre films,” says Julie Bergeron (Head of Industry Programs). “We are thrilled this year to welcome new comers including Frontières-Fantasia Film Festival, Annecy, Panama IFF and Los Cabos into the mix and look forward to seeing their projects here in Cannes.”

“Cannes is the perfect opportunity for Works-In-Progress to have an international visibility as it is the largest film industry gathering of the year. Showcasing films that are in post-production means that potential partners can become involved at this critical stage of the production process, and have the possibility of being completed with the eye and opinion of experts in the international film business. Hopefully they can also be picked up by sales agents which will facilitate even more the future of their projects overseas,” says Jérôme Paillard (Executive Director of the Marché du Film).
