Director Biography
Jairo Carrillo is a Columbian writer, producer and director who specializes in comedy and animation.
He first studied animation in England, where he collaborated with the London Sinfonietta, a contemporary-music ensemble, as the art director and digital artist on an interactive animation project, titled 3D Music. The project was lauded by The New York Times as a “happy collision between Fantasia, the Walt Disney film that popularized the classics, and the game Final Fantasy.” The reviewer went on to praise Carrillo’s work: “There are no dancing Fantasia elephants in 3D Music, but its surreal virtual landscapes, by the digital artist Eduardo Carrillo, soften the impact of Mr. Hayden's score, which is crowded with spiky dissonances and clashing timbres
Back in Colombia, Carrillo co-directed two live action movie comedies, Dios los junta y ellos se separan and Muertos de susto. Muertos de susto was number 2 at the box office in 2008.
In 2010, Carrillo completed another ambitious project, his animated feature-length documentary Pequeñas Voces (aka Little Voices), which he produced and directed (with Oscar Andrade). A touching tale about internally displaced children in Colombia, Little Voices was acclaimed following its world premiere at the 2010 Venice Film Festival (in the Venice Days section, Giornate Degli Autori). Variety’s reviewer wrote, "After Waltz with Bashir, the animated documentary genre has another impressive contribution with Little Voices."
Director Statement
After completing my first animated film, Pequeñas Voces, in 2010, I decided to make an animated movie like the ones that excited me so much as a child. I remember every second of those films in which the little heroes have no chance of winning, but at the last minute they make it happen.
In The Rescuers, for example, a little mouse saves a little girl. I watched it over and over on our VHS player until it was so scratched I could not watch it any more. At age 10, I told my mother that I did not want to go to school and wanted make animated movies instead.
My mother tenderly explained that those animated movies were not made by children, but rather by adults who went to school and then to university and then to work in animated movies.
I was really shocked by the idea that adults made movies for children and not the children themselves. And I hated the word “Wait,” which I always heard when I wanted to open my presents ahead of Christmas Eve. Waiting for Christmas always felt like an eternity. And to think that I had to get through primary school then high school and then university before I could make animated films made no sense to me. So in that moment, I decided to grow up as fast as possible.
But when I was finally old enough to study film, I discovered there were no film schools and no animation degrees in my home country of Colombia, so I did media studies at university and finally went to the UK to get Master’s Degree in animation, followed by an MFA at Columbia University in New York City, where I could focus on the art and craft of story telling.
Finally, after this long life journey, I am skilled to make the movies that excited me so much as a kid. This movie has music and a clumsy, funny monkey. It is a movie that enchants me and will enchant little kids like me.
Through the magic of the animation, I hope to make them laugh and clap and cry just as I did.
