Question #1 Financing for Josh & Grady. For many, financing has always been the toughest part of creating content. Has the pandemic changed the way your team finances projects? If so how?

Question #2 Development/Production for Sefi & David. As the saying goes, Content is King. But not everyone is able to create right now. What are the biggest challenges you are facing with producing content and how are you overcoming those challenges?

Question #3 Exhibition/Distribution is for Leslie & Bruno. As theaters shut down around the world, festivals soon followed. Now tat both are seeing signs of life, people want to know what’s next. What changes are you seeing in the festival/market circuit? Also, what new opportunities are happening with distribution to Cesar?

Question #4 Independent/Studio for ALL panelist. The industry has been rapidly changing for some time. As large studios continue to deal with the impact from global shutdowns, it is still unclear what the New Normal looks like. Are there opportunities for independent creators now? If so, what do you see?


Audience questions

What is the best advise for doing a $1-$2M movie without any equity attached? I mean lets say. If you have your tax credit, some potential pre-sales, & some GAP. Can you get the film funded without actually having any hard equity in place?


For any panelist that would like to give advice - I have only produced a self-funded film (which I distributed on Amazon Prime) and have worked as crew on large full-budget productions to gain experience of how larger productions work. My background is in community building and alliance building in other industries. For someone who does not understand the ins and outs of obtaining funding within this industry where do I start and what do you want someone to have in place in order to approach potential funders? Our team can produce high quality for very low cost but do not know how to gain investors. Where would you start? What do I need to learn/study? Thank you!


What are some of the financial mistakes that newcomers should be aware of?


I did my research ahead of time and queried producers/distributors/financiers, but no one responded. Would it be profitable to follow up?

Prior to filmmaking, David focused on playwriting, and has over a dozen plays published through Samuel French Inc. David is the only playwright in the history of American Theater to premiere three plays on New York stages in one month. His first film, LOVE LUDLOW, based on one of his plays, premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film festival, where David became the first independent filmmaker there to integrate corporate sponsorship to finance and promote his film. He wrote and produced the Disney hit, THE BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. His most recent film, 2016’s THE GREAT GILLY HOPKINS, stars Glenn Close, Octavia Spencer, Kathy Bates and Julia Stiles.
