European cinema has lost a great filmmaker and the European Film Academy has lost a dear friend: Nik Powell

The academy, where Nik served many years on the Board, shared the sad news to the mebers of the Academy:

"In the early 1970s Nik Powell set up Virgin Records with Richard Branson and in the space of ten years the pair turned a small mail-order record operation into a multi-million pound conglomerate.

Nik has acted as executive producer on various films such as Neil Jordan’s COMPANY OF WOLVES, Oscar-nominated MONA LISA, Michael Caton-Jones’ SCANDAL, and Neil Jordan’s multi-Oscar nominated THE CRYING GAME for which he won a 1993 EFA for European Achievement of the Year, together with Stephen Woolley.

Nik and Stephen's new company produced Iain Softley’s BACKBEAT, Terence Davies’ THE NEON BIBLE, Shane Meadows’ TWENTYFOUR: SEVEN, Mark Herman’s Oscar and Golden Globe nominated LITTLE VOICE, Fred Schepisis’ LAST ORDERS starring Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins, Tom Courtenay, Helen Mirren, David Hemmings and Ray Winstone, Charles Dance’s LADIES IN LAVENDER, starring Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Miriam Margolis and Daniel Brühl and Nik also executive produced CALENDAR GIRLS.

As Chairman of the EFA from 1996 to 2003 and later vice chairman, Nik really helped shaping the European Film Academy and the European Film Awards into what they are today. He was appointed Director of the National Film and Television School in 2005.

Nik Powell passed away this morning in Oxford. We will miss him."
