Interview with Writer, Director Producer Scott Herford at 2019 AFM

Scott Herford began his television career in documentaries producing and series producing. (ABC TV's Race Around The World, National Geographic’s ‘Hayden Turner' Video Postcards: AFRICA) and has fulfilled producer and executive in charge of production roles on three independent feature films: Circle of Lies, Pros & Ex-Cons, Going Down Under. Distribution for these movies by Warner Bros. LIONSGATE Entertainment and Maverick Pictures respectively.

How did you begin your career in film?

SCOTT: I loved and still enjoy painting and drawing. I’ve long approached film and documentary as extensions of painting. Film is like another level of ‘composition’ that a painter or drawer contends with. I have done a fair amount of TV animation but composition goes further. Past all technical levels, good film is made of good scenes. Creating working scene hashing these out, creating with actors to make action work in ways that perhaps haven't been imagined before. It is at heart so pleasing and surprising to me.

Has it been a rewarding path or very challenging?

SCOTT: You know, challenging and rewarding might sum up the entire process. Lose small and win big!

What is the film industry in Australia like for indie filmmakers?

SCOTT: Australia is visually scenic, even as the industry transform there’s definitely a scene here. To me, the hardest part is simply starting. Our team interviewed the team from SYD2030, and they came at that series as making something, anything so that once it was made then no one could take it away from them. It was the first the first web drama series the ABC ever broadcast.

What have been some of the most rewarding projects you have worked on?

SCOTT: I mainly love it when scenes work in ways that I didn’t expect and in positive ways. One of the projects that explores the conflict and tension in a Girls vs. Boys world my team and i will be returning to is being retitled right now. (This world is sort of like in baby animals fighting or the schoolyard, but turned up in a way that has not been done before except by us;)  and do we ever grow out of it? I posted a draft of some of those scenes so I had some scenes live for the American Film Market. That’s my drama showreel that you can find here: https://www.scottherford.com/showreel.

What are you working on now?

SCOTT: Developing a sports thriller script with an amazing team that make me sort of look like a school kid in their midst!

You have attended many film markets and festivals. Why is it important for a producer to attend these events?

SCOTTSure, lots of business gets done and more often than not being there makes all the difference. Everything is relationships and people. The relationships I’ve fostered through these events are some of my best friends on the planet!

What would you say to young producers and writers entering the film industry today?

SCOTT: Foster a team, sort of like a band. Once you are consistently working and producing you will be producing a platform that launches so many people off on careers in different areas.

You are a writer and a producer. Do you prefer one over the other?

SCOTT: They are without a doubt different hats. The best part is a team moving together and with great momentum. That’s when post-production becomes so important. It’s been my preference to work with a small team of screen editors. The editing is very much a retelling of the original source script. A good editor is such a trusted important role and collabortion can make any of us geniuses! Even for one day!
