Garth Davis Joins Forces With See-Saw Films To Launch Production Company ‘I Am That’

Producer and director Garth Davis, with See-Saw Films’ joint managing directors Iain Canning and Emile Sherman today announced the creation of I Am That. The 50/50 partnership will develop and produce feature film and television projects for Davis to direct and produce alongside See-Saw’s Canning and Sherman. Samantha Lang has been named Head of Development for the newly formed company effective immediately.

See-Saw and Davis have previously teamed on the Academy Award® Best Picture nominee Lion, starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, and Mary Magdalene, starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, both directed by Davis, and the Golden Globe® nominated “Top of the Lake”, co-directed by Davis and Jane Campion and produced by See-Saw Films.

Garth Davis is a renowned film, television and commercials director whose feature directorial debut Lion was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. For the first time in the history of the Directors Guild of America, Davis was nominated twice in the same year for Lion - for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film, and also for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director. The latter he won. Lion was nominated for four Golden Globes, six Critics Choice Awards and five BAFTAs and went on to make over $145M worldwide. Davis was previously nominated for an Emmy for co-directing the critically acclaimed television series “Top of the Lake” alongside Academy Award®-winner Jane Campion. In the commercials realm, Garth won a Gold Lion at Cannes and a D&AD Pencil for Schweppes ‘Burst’ and in 2010 he received a finalist nomination in Directors Guild of America for best commercials director.

Samantha Lang joins I Am That to lead the search and development of film and television projects for Davis to direct. President of the Australian Director’s Guild, Lang has written, directed and produced both mainstream television programming and award-winning feature films screening at major international festivals, including The Well which was in competition for the Palme D’or in Cannes. She will be based in Sydney working closely with See-Saw’s London and Sydney based teams.

See-Saw Films’ Canning and Sherman stated, “Working with Garth is joyous and creatively exhilarating. He is that rare director who has an auteur’s eye, can build complete worlds, and is at home in the intimate creation of character and performance. We’re thrilled to be building a company around his vision. We are also so pleased to have found Samantha Lang to drive the creative acquisition and development of projects across film and television. Her creative talents and intelligence are second to none, and our tastes are all deeply aligned.”

“I AM THAT stems from my long-standing relationship with both Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, who have been incredibly supportive of me in my filmmaking journey and are wonderful partners,” said Davis.  “I also feel very lucky to have the talented Samantha Lang by our side in this new chapter, helping us unearth compelling stories for film and television. Bec Smith and Keya Khayatian of UTA continue to be an indispensable part of my team.”

“It is thrilling to be part of such a promising new venture. I am delighted to be working alongside the brilliant and deeply sensitive Garth Davis, and in the company of Emile Sherman and Iain Canning,” said Lang. “This is a wonderful opportunity to broaden my horizons and collaborate on large scale international film and TV projects, with three creatives whose work I admire.”

See-Saw is currently in production on Jane Campion’s feature The Power of the Dog for Netflix, post-production on Ammonite, written and directed by Francis Lee and starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan and in production on the television series ‘The North Water,’ written and directed by Andrew Haigh (45 Years), adapted from the novel by Ian McGuire and starring Jack O’Connell and Colin Farrell. Operation Mincemeat, directed by John Madden and starring Colin Firth, is currently in pre-production.

Simon Gillis and Hakan Kousetta See-Saw Films’ COO of Film and TV respectively, negotiated the deal with UTA.

Davis is represented by UTA in all areas other than commercials, where he is represented by Reset Content in the USA, Exit Films in Australia, and Academy Films in the UK. His attorney is Craig Emmanuel at Paul Hastings.
