The hugely popular Japanese mystery video game Root Letter will get the long-awaited live-action adaptation treatment from Akatsuki Entertainment USA, it was announced today by the company’s president, Annmarie Sairrino Bailey.
The Los Angeles-based entertainment arm of leading Japanese mobile gaming company Akatsuki Inc. is developing, producing, and financing the Kadokawa Games IP to star Danny Ramirez (upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, Assassination Nation), Keana Marie (Netflix’s “Huge in France,” CBS’s “Life In Pieces”), and Lydia Hearst (The Haunting of Sharon Tate, Syfy’s “Z Nation”), with award-winning filmmaker Sonja O’Hara (Amazon’s “Doomsday”) making her directorial debut from the screenplay written by David Ebeltoft (2016 Tribeca Film Festival’s “Here Alone”).
The feature will be a gritty reimagining of the game’s core story of the protagonist in search of a former pen pal after she disappears under curious circumstances.
Principal Photography began on September 16th, 2019 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bailey will serve as producer along with the company’s Moeko Suzuki and Kat McPhee.
“We are thrilled to partner with the distinguished Kadokawa Games to adapt Root Letter into a successful live-action feature film. The core story of Root Letter has touched many fans in the gaming world and has great potential to translate globally at the cinemas,” commented Bailey.
Root Letter originally released on PlayStation (PS) 4 and PS Vita, and sold over 400,000 copies in Japan and overseas. The game series is also available on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
Bailey adds, “David Ebeltoft’s version of Root Letter absolutely ticked both boxes of an intriguing story and characters that will resonate with audiences. It inspires the complex and heartbreaking world he has reimagined based on the original story. We are thrilled that both Sonja and our cast are so excited to come on board.”
“Root Letter has been one of our most popular video games since it was created. We are delighted fans and moviegoers around the world will have the opportunity to enjoy the story on a new platform as it evolves into a live-action feature film. Akatsuki Entertainment is the perfect partner to bring this rich and engaging tale to the big screen. We look forward to seeing this film soon,” commented Yoshimi Yasuda, CEO of Kadokawa Games.
Danny Ramirez recently wrapped the anticipated film Top Gun: Maverick, opposite Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm, which will premiere Summer 2020. Ramirez was last seen in director Sam Levinson’s Assassination Nation, which premiered at Sundance 2018, for Neon. He recently wrapped director Katharine O’Brien’s Lost Transmissions, opposite Alexandra Daddario, Simon Pegg, and Juno Temple, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival 2019, David Raboy’s The Giant and the Netflix series “On My Block”.

Previously, she won Best Lead Actress at the Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival and the Bogart Film Festival for her role in the film Posthumous which has won numerous awards at festivals around the country. Marie can be seen in ABC’s “The Catch” and “The Goldbergs”, along with CBS’s “Wisdom Of The Crowd”, “Criminal Minds”, and “Life In Pieces”. She also had a recurring role on “Flaked” for Netflix.
