Covert Media is announcing a new project for AFM, "Need" based on the highly popular YA novel of the same name

Covert Media is fully financing, producing and will handle worldwide sales on the feature film adaptation of the chilling YA novel Need, it was announced today by Covert Media’s CEO Paul Hanson (District 9, W.).

Covert’s Elissa Friedman (Ophelia), Media Content Capital’s Sasha Shapiro (Fading Gigolo, Ophelia) and Anton Lessine (Fading Gigolo, Fury) serve as executive producers of the haunting thriller.

Rising filmmaking talent Samantha Buck & Marie Schlingmann will write and direct the film adaptation of the celebrated book. Buck & Schlingmann have written and directed a number of acclaimed films and shorts including the Gotham Award nominated and Peabody Award winning feature documentary Best Kept Secret. Buck & Schlingmann are graduates from Columbia University's MFA film program where they directed their award winning shorts Canary, which played at the Palm Springs ShortFest, and The Mink Catcher, which played at Telluride & SXSW.

Based on the acclaimed 2015 novel by New York Times best-selling author Joelle Charbonneau, Need revolves around a new social networking site offering high school students the chance to get anything and everything they desire in exchange for a price. Kaylee Dunham needs only one thing – a kidney for her younger brother. She soon learns that there is a high price to be paid for getting what you want and as her peer’s demands escalate, so does the body count.

Need was awarded the 2016 Anthony Award for Best Young Adult Novel and has been highly reviewed by readers and critics alike.

“Need is a fan favorite YA novel that we know will make for an exciting and chilling look at the world of social media,” said Hanson. “With the fresh perspective of the creative team we have in Samantha and Marie and the twists and turns of Joelle’s novel, this is a film that already has us on the edge of our seats.  It’s a dynamic and frightening story of our times.”

Joelle Charbonneau is the celebrated author of the New York Times Best-Selling trilogy The Testing (The Testing, Independent Study and Graduation Day) as well as two mystery series: The Rebecca Robbins mysteries (Minotaur Books) and the Glee Club mysteries (Berkley). Her YA books have appeared on the Indie Next List, on the YALSA Top 10 books for 2014 as well as the YALSA Quick Picks for reluctant readers. Paramount Pictures optioned “The Testing” following its publication.

Buck & Schlingmann are represented by Lee Stobby of Lee Stobby Entertainment and lawyer Stephen Clark of Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman. The deal was negotiated on Covert’s behalf by Chet Devaskar, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs.

Launched in August 2015, Covert Media is an independent production, financing, and distribution company based in Beverly Hills, a partnership between global private equity fund Media Content Capital (MCC) and veteran film executive Paul Hanson. Covert Media focuses on high-quality, commercial content for worldwide audiences in the feature film, television, and digital marketplace by fostering meaningful relationships with filmmakers and creative artists.

Along with Covert’s own production slate and sales, including the upcoming Ophelia starring Naomi Watts and Daisy Ridley, Forty-Six directed by Alik Sakharov and Resurface alongside Broken Road Productions, the company services and supports the library and upcoming projects for MCC-owned QED. Covert Media recently launched Lexica Films, an international label set to champion 5 – 10 foreign language feature film titles per year for the worldwide marketplace.
