Cinemas in Europe during the Pandemic from DGT online informer

Latest issues of our newsletter DGT online informer that have been dedicated to investigate HOW THE COVID 19 CRISIS IS MODIFYING THE CINEMA WORLD.

DGT 171 includes a graph about the Covid’s impact on admissions and gbo as well as the Cicae's appeal to the European Union to safeguard the existence of arthouse cinemas; in addition, an update of the map presenting the dates of the cinema lockdown and monitoring drive in cinemas in Europe;

MEDIA Salles elaboration on data supplied by Deniz Yavuz and Comscore

The Covid 19 pandemic has a had a strong impact on the cinema industry, deeply affecting and modifying the way of cinema consumption.

This issue of the DGT online informer is presenting an updated version of the map that shows:

  • The dates of the beginning and the end of the cinema lockdown.
  • The dates of the beginning and the end of the second cinema lockdown.
  • The opening or reopening of drive-in cinemas.

A New Wave of Closures

Faced with the return of the pandemic in Europe, several governments have adopted measures that include the renewed shutdown of movie theatres. Alongside these provisions, which are a repeat of what happened in the spring, this time what are particularly striking are the decisions taken by companies like Cineworld in the UK and Ireland or trade associations such as the FCB in Belgium, which have automatically ruled for the closure of cinemas on the basis of economic considerations. This issue of DGT photographs the “second lockdown” in Europe, presenting an updated version of the map given in issue 167 of 17 July. Thanks to the collaboration of Deniz Yavuz from Antrakt, this DGT also contributes to an evaluation of Covid’s impact on the trend of cinema-going by revealing box office and ticket sales for the first 9 months of 2020. From a comparison with the previous year, it emerges that the GBO stands at levels ranging from the UK’s 32.5% to the 50.6% in Turkey. Alarming box offices which, with the second wave of closures, beginning right at the start of a season of traditionally intense cinema-going such as that of the Christmas period, risks losing the opportunity to make up lost ground.

And so big questions are arising as to the future of cinemas in Europe. Emphasized by the words of Christian Bräuer, President of Cicae, who launches an appeal to the European Union to safeguard the existence of arthouse cinemas.
