Italian director Roberto Andò (The Confessions, Long Live Freedom, The Prince’s Manuscript) will chair the Jury of Cinema History Students which – for the fourth time – will award the  VENEZIA CLASSICI AWARD for the BEST RESTORED FILM and the BEST DOCUMENTARY ON CINEMA.

The numerous restored masterpieces in the Venezia Classici section of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival include: An American Werewolf in London by John Landis (1981), Money by Robert Bresson(L’argent, 1983), The Battle of Algiers by Gillo Pontecorvo (La battaglia di Algeri, 1966), The Dawn of the Dead by George A. Romero (1978), Manhattan by Woody Allen (1979), Dark Eyes by Nikita Michalkov (Oci Ciornie, 1987), Legend of the Mountain by King Hu (1979), The Thief of Paris by Louis Malle (Le Voleur,1965), and Break up - L’uomo dei cinque palloni  by Marco Ferreri (The Man with the Balloons, 1965).

The 73rd Venice International Film Festival will be held at the Lido from August 31 to September 10, 2016; it is directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Biennale chaired by Paolo Baratta.

Since 2012, and with growing success, the Festival section Venezia Classici has been presenting the world premieres of a selection of the best restorations of classic films conducted over the previous year by film libraries, cultural institutions and productions all over the world. Curated by Alberto Barbera in collaboration with Stefano Francia di Celle, Venezia Classici also presents a selection of documentaries about cinema and its filmmakers. The Jury, chaired by Roberto Andò, is composed of 26 cinema history students – nominated by their professors – in their final year at Italian universities, DAMS performing arts courses, and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

Roberto Andò – Biography

Born in Palermo on January 11, 1959, after studying philosophy, he began working at a very young age as an assistant director for Francesco Rosi and Federico Fellini, and later, for Michael Cimino and Francis Ford Coppola. Of fundamental importance was his encounter with Leonardo Sciascia, who became a good friend and encouraged him to write.

He has gained renown in Italy and abroad as a director for  the stage, the opera and the silver screen. Andò’s friendship with Harold Pinter led to his staging of Celebration, The Room, and Old Times, the first Italian version the great playwright authorized after Luchino Visconti’s contested staging in 1972. The famous dramatist is also the subject of an important film-portrait, presented at the Venice Film Festival, a documentary which concludes a triptych of films dedicated to the filmmaker’s maestros: Memory Loss, about the director Robert Wilson; The Filmmaker and the Labyrinth (Il cineasta e il labirinto), a conversation with his friend and mentor Francesco Rosi; For Webern, about the famous Viennese composer Anton Webern. 

His stage productions include memorable collaborations with Moni Ovadia, Diario ironico dall’esilio, Il caso Kafka, Le storie di Keuner from Bertoldt Brecht; Shylock, ovvero il Mercante di Venezia in prova by William Shakespeare; the performance-installations Natura morta per i diritti umani, based on texts by Umberto Eco, Paul Auster and Jean Baudrillard, with Isabelle Huppert;  and Proprio come se nulla fosse avvenuto by Anna Maria Ortese, starring Anna Bonaiuto, Vincenzo Pirrotta and Maria Nazionale.

He has directed operas such as Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien by Debussy, A Survivor from Warsaw by Arnold Schoenberg (narrated by Harvey Keitel), La madre invita a comer by Luis De Pablo (Biennale di Venezia), The Magic Flute by Mozart, The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner. His most famous movies include: Diario senza date, starring Bruno Ganz, Lorenza Indovina, Franco Scaldati and Moni Ovadia; The Prince’s Manuscript (Il manoscritto del principe),starring Michel Bouquet, Laurent Terzieff, Jeanne Moreau, Paolo Briguglia and Leopoldo Trieste; Strange Crime (Sotto falso nome), starring Daniel Auteuil, Anna Mouglalis, Michel Lonsdale and Greta Scacchi; Secret Journey (Viaggio segreto), starring Alessio Boni, Valeria Solarino, Donatella Finocchiaro, Claudia Gerini and Emir Kusturica; Long Live Freedom (Viva la libertà),starring Toni Servillo, Valerio Mastandrea, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Michela Cescon and Anna Bonaiuto; and The Confessions (Le Confessioni), starring Toni Servillo, Connie Nielsen, Daniel Auteuil, Pierfrancesco Favino, Marie Josèe Croze and Moritz Bleibtreu. His movies have been presented at the major festivals throughout the world and have received important international and Italian awards.

His first novel, Il trono vuoto, published by Bompiani, won the  Campiello Opera Prima prize.
