At the time of this press briefing, the major part of our extensive study and program selection for the Viennale 2008
has been concluded, and thus we can give you a general overview of the orientation and direction of this year's
festival.
What stands out in the choice of films for the Viennale 2008 is the wide spectrum of the program, covering a
great diversity of cinematography and cinematic countries of origin. As compared to last year, Latin-American cinema,
to name but one example, has clearly gained in importance and will be represented at this year's festival by a
large number of interesting and innovative works from e.g. Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.
In the documentary program, filmmaking from Israel takes up a special place with half-a-dozen politically and
aesthetically relevant works, dealing with the country's contradictory history and present in an exceptionally open
and critical way. We also make room for a series of independent American documentaries that are both commentary
and critique on the current political situation in the United States - between the old war and the upcoming
elections.
In addition, we will present several remarkable biographical reflections and portraits about personalities such as
Derek Jarman, Klaus Kinski, Patti Smith and Roman Polanski, which are juxtaposed to explicitly political and contemporary
analyses and descriptions of the current state of affairs, including documentaries such as Bastards of the
Party, De Match, Iron Ladies of Liberia, Chaiqian and Sollbruchstelle.
In the feature film program, the names of familiar and well-established directors such as Arnaud Desplechin, Jean-
Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Jia Zhangke and Johnnie To can be found alongside a large number of unknown directors
and promising discoveries, including Azazel Jacobs, Pierre Léon, Enrique Rivero, Noh Young-seok, Barry
Jenkins and Jake Mahaffy.
In addition, the Viennale devotes itself to the presentation of international genre cinema, including works by directors
such as Tomas Alfredson, Isidro Ortiz, James Toback and Pou-soi Cheang.
This exciting diversity of a great lively world cinema and committed political filmmaking convincingly pours scorn
on the weekly commercial offer that chance floods our cinemas with, and at the same time gives evidence of how
much a film festival can and must be a correction, expansion and criticism of the current state of cinema.
5
Selection of the feature film program
El cant dels ocells Albert Serra, E 2008
Cómo estar muerto Manuel Ferrari, Argentina 2008
Un conte de Noël Arnaud Desplechin, F 2008
Daytime Drinking Noh Young-seok, South Korea 2008
Entre les murs Laurent Cantet, F 2008
Kimi no Tomodachi Hiroki Ryuichi, Japan 2008
Låt den rätte komma in Tomas Alfredson, S 2008
März Händl Klaus, A 2008
Momma's Man Azazel Jacobs, USA 2008
My Winnipeg Guy Maddin, Canada 2007
United Red Army Wakamatsu Koji, Japan 2007
Waltz With Bashir Ari Folman, Israel/F/D 2008
Selection of the documentary film program
7915 km Nikolaus Geyrhalter, A 2008
Beautiful Losers Aaron Rose, Joshua Leonard, USA 2008
La Forteresse Fernand Melgar, CH 2008
Ich gehe jetzt rein Aysun Bademsoy, D 2008
In die Welt Constantin Wulff, A 2008
Jesus Christus Erlöser Peter Geyer, D 2008
Man On Wire James Marsh, GB 2007
De match Kees Hin, NL 2008
Mi vida dentro Lucía Gajá, Mexiko/USA 2007
Of Time and the City Terence Davies, GB 2008
The Order of Myths Margaret Brown, USA 2008
Sollbruchstelle Eva Stotz, D 2008
Selection of the short film program
Ah, Liberty Ben Rivers, GB 2008
Beirut Outtakes Peggy Ahwesh, USA 2007
Le Genou d'Artemide Jean-Marie Straub, F/I 2007
Ground Control Siegfried A. Whilst Hull Film prepares for the next edition of GLIMMER, the 7th Hull International Short Film Festival, there'll be a perfect opportunity to check out some of the most exciting films from the most recent edition. With award winning dramas, enticing experimental films and some astounding animations it will be a chance to re-discover what makes GLIMMER the most exciting short film festival in the region.

Included in the programme will be HAIRLADY (Dir. David Birdsell, USA) the winner of the 2008 GLIMMER International Award sponsored by World Trade Centre Hull & Humber. A visually brilliant and witty slice of experimental cinema, the film follows a man who grows his hair and the woman who likes to collect it. More beautiful cinema is available in the winner of the GLIMMER UK Award supported by Hull Trains winner DOG'S MERCURY (Dir. Martin Radich, UK) that provides series of unforgettable character portraits set in a rundown English backwater. A risky and brave film, this is a chance to see the early work of a director whose profile is at an all time high thanks to the recent premiere of his feature film CRACK WILLOW at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

CHRISTMAS IN HUDDERSFIELD (Dir. Peter Spence, UK) is a revealing documentary about of the last ever gigs played by The Sex Pistols made all the more remarkable for the fact that it was a children's party. Definitely not for children is ALEX AND A**E TRUCK (Dir. Sean Conway, UK) a brilliantly crude, rude and very adult film about a nymphomaniac and her friends. Not for the easily offended, the film is a joyously offensive fare that has been helmed by one of the most talented young directors working in the UK at the moment.

Other films in the programme include haunting animation LANDING LIGHTS (Dir. Graham Young, UK) and the moving Finnish film HIGH HOPES (Dir. Mazdak Nassir, Finland). We'll also screen the classic short film BASS INVADERS directed by our patron Simon Ellis.

Glimmer Director Laurence Boyce said:
"If you want to remind yourself of what makes GLIMMER so exciting (or, shockingly, missed the films the first time around then this programme will be a great chance to sit back, relax and enjoy some great films all in the laid back atmosphere of The Lamp. We can also promise one or two surprises along the way, so come and watch the films and meet the Hull Film team"

The screening will take place at 7pm at The Lamp, Hull. Entry is free. The programme is unsuitable for under 18s.

Glimmer: The 7th Hull International Short Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its next edition which will take place from 21st-26th April 2009. Glimmer, the largest short film festival in the North of England, is looking for innovative and exciting films from across the globe of any genre that run up to a maximum of 45 minutes. Please go to www.hullfilm.co.uk for more information

Hull Film is supported by Arts Council England, Hull City Arts Unit and Screen Yorkshire.

The Feel Good Film Festival (FGFF) announces it is set to premiere Friday, August 22 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The three-day event (which will run through Sunday, August 24) will screen films aimed at both adult and family audiences that feature positive themes, happy endings, make audiences laugh, and capture the beauty of our world.

The festival will feature 53 films, including 15 features, 31 shorts, and 7 student films. Along with the films offered throughout the festival, additional activities will include an Opening Night Gala with Rainn Wilson serving as host and Tom Kenny ("Sponge Bob Square Pants") joining as a special guest, an original screenplay competition, an original song competition, a panel discussion featuring family entertainment executives and artists, and a Closing Night Awards Gala highlighted by a Tribute to film and comedy legend, Jonathan Winters.
In addition to the Closing Night Tribute honoring Jonathan Winters, the Gala ceremonies will include the presentation of awards for Best Feel Good Feature Length Film, Best Feel Good Short Film, Best Feel Good Student Film, Best Feel Good Cinematography, Best Feel Good Screenplay, Best Feel Good Original Song, and Audience Awards for Favorite Feel Good Feature Film and Favorite Feel Good Short Film.

The awards will include prizes of $7500 ($2500 in unrestricted cash from FGFF, as well as $2500 in goods and services from Panther Dollies and Cranes, and $2500 in film stock from Fuji Film) for the winner of the Best Feel Good Feature Length Film, $2000 ($1000 in unrestricted cash from FGFF, and $1000 in goods and services from Panther Dollies and Cranes) for the winner of the Best Feel Good Short Film, $2500 in goods and services from Panther Dollies and Cranes from the winner of Best Feel Good Cinematography, unrestricted cash prizes from FGFF for the winners of the Best Feel Good Screenplay ($1000) and Best Feel Good Original Song ($500), and two four week complimentary tuition packages at the New York Film Academy for the top two winners of the Feel Good Student Film category.
THE RAINBOW TRIBE will screen as the Opening Night Gala feature film presentation on Friday, August 22. Directed by Christopher Watson and Produced/written by Dan Frisch, the film stars David James Elliot, as a middle- aged adult in crisis, who reunites with his best friend when he returns to the summer camp of his youth. His troubles seem to magnify when he is joined by a rag-tag group of 10 year-old campers. Through their struggles they collectively overcome their personal problems and exchange them for one of the best summers of their lives. The screening will mark the film's Los Angeles Premiere. Also screening as part of the Opening Night Gala will be the short films LA LUNE (recently named winner of Best Animated Short at 2008 Comic Con Film Festival), directed by Kelly Kyung-Hee Shon, and THE NEW BOZENA, directed by Rainn Wilson.

Frisch expressed his happiness that THE RAINBOW TRIBE will be making it's L.A. debut via the FGFF, saying "At the forefront of an independent film producer's mind is how best to land a theatrical deal. The Feel Good Film Festival answered that question for me. The honor of being selected to exhibit our film on the opening night of this inaugural event demonstrates the kind of commitment they have for getting the best independent films available. THE RAINBOW TRIBE is hot off the press and one of those rare gems-- a true reflection of what The Feel Good Film Festival is all about."
CERTIFIABLY JONATHAN will screen as the Closing Night Gala presentation on Sunday, August 24. Directed by Jim Pasternak and produced by Richard Marshall, the film is described as a "dadamentary" which follows Jonathan Winters' pursuit of having his paintings shown at the New York Museum of Modern Art. With the help of the filmmakers and a friendly art critic, Winters begins work on the new pieces needed to secure the showing. However, when one of his prized works is stolen, the legendary funnyman loses his sense of humor and therefore his ability to paint. What follows is a comic quest to get his creative mojo back in time to make the museum's deadline. The film features appearances by Robin Williams, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Nora and Kevin Dunn, Howie Mandel, and Gary Owens, among others. The screening will also be the film's Los Angeles premiere.

CERTIFIABLY JONATHAN producer Marshall said it was particularly appropriate to honor Winters prior to the screening of their film, adding "Jim (Pasternak) and I set out to make a film that reflected Jonathan's aesthetic, got inside his head and honored him in a way we felt no one else had. We wanted the world to see him as the genius, artist, provocateur, and writer he is, still at 80 years old and going strong."
Regarding the announcement of the festival's debut schedule, Festival Director Kristen Ridgway says, "We created the Feel Good Film Festival as "happy" counter-programming for the number of independent and studio films that seem to have the philosophy that the more dark and depressing the film, the better. It's not our intent to screen films that are 100% G-rated or religious, but we do believe our audience members will leave our theatres feeling better than when they entered 100% of the time. And to have an opportunity to honor a comedy legend like Jonathan Winters, who makes you feel good simply by mentioning his name will be an absolute thrill."
FGFF will also screen the winning entry of an online competition co-sponsored by the festival on Indieflix.com. 24th International Shortfim Festival Berlin
4th to 9th November 2008
From the 4th to the 9th of November 2008 interfilm Berlin will be celebrating the 24th edition of the International Short Film Festival Berlin!
Featuring around 450 international and German short films originating from more than 55 countries, interfilm Berlin presents the diverse nature of the short film spectrum in sections such as live-action, children's film, animation, documentary, experimental and music clips.
Over six festival days, on eight screens in the centre of Berlin, audiences will be given the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate poetic, musical, commercial, hybrid, shocking, and incredibly odd films - always short and compactly compiled in 90 minute programmes.
Highlights of the festival:

C O M P E T I T I O N S
International and German Competition
Current short film productions from emerging young talent will compete against established filmmakers from all over the world in German and international competitions. International juries will award prizes valued at a total of 40,000 Euro. The audience will get to reward their favourite German short film with a prize of their own for the second year running.
forward - international viral video award
And even in its 24th year, the German capital's oldest film festival (after the Berlinale), has something innovative to offer: during the "forward - international viral video award" the best viral films with a message will be awarded prizes by both an audience and industry jury. This is the first festival for short films from and for the internet to be held at a German film festival.
KuKi - International Short Film Festival for Children and Youth
The festival season kicks off on the 2nd of November with the International Short Film Festival for Children and Youth, making it the first year that "KUKI- Shorts for kids" 2008, will be a festival in its own right, a festival within a festival as it were. For a period of eight days competition programmes and thematic film sections will entice children, parents, school groups and teachers to the cinema screen. Whether the films happen to be animated, in a foreign language, with or without dialogue: short films by and for kids tell stories that everyone can relate to!

S P E C I A L P R O G R A M S
Focus on - Mexico and the Autonomous Basque Region
The aspiring and internationally successful short film scenes belonging to Mexico and the Autonomous Basque Region will be highlighted in this year's Country Specials.
Special Guests - Miranda Pennel and Charlie Todd
Numerous special programmes take film productions from all the corners of the globe and give them their due place on the big screen, such as the award-winning dance films and (little known) ads made by the filmmaker Miranda Pennel. Spectacularly choreographed music clips from Bollywood productions as well as international dance films and music videos will certainly get the audience swinging in their seats!
Scenes of friendly, liberating chaos are sure to abound when our guest from New York, Charlie Todd, the founder of Improv Everywhere, personally presents his world renowned "missions" (= performances) and even hold one, live with Interfilm Berlin.
Lectures and workshops, panels and parties
The festival locations Volksbuehne Berlin, Roten Salon and Club Scala will set the scene for intense discourse and entertaining encounters at the various lectures and workshops, panels and parties held there, not to mention the Festival Club and filmmakers' brunch. Acquire an insight into the current themes, trends and techniques found in short films from all over the world by visiting the film market held in the Babylon:Mitte festival cinema daily.
With an audience of more than 14,000, 120 German and international guests and 450 industry visitors counted at last year's festival alone, interfilm Berlin is undoubtedly one of the most important platforms for short film in Europe.

<text type="body">
The VI edition of The International Euro Arab Film Festival takes shape. After three tears with the same logotype, AMAL decides renew his image for adapting to the news needs of the Festival. Our object, promote the idea of a bridge festival between two cultures. Our proposal, incorporate the arab language in the logotype.

Faithful to the idea of that each year the advertising image of AMAL will be different, we have designed an innovative campaign that enhances its aesthetic and its informative function. With the slogan "Life AMAL with the senses", promises to give free rein to the feelings through the eyesight, the smell, the touch, the taste ante the hearing.

These five senses represent for AMAL everyone of the sections that make up the Festival that will celebrate of the 25th to the 31st of October in Santiago of Compostela.

Like this, and according to the criterion of AMAL in its VI edition, the eye represents the section of fiction. AMAL defines this sense of the eyesight as the sense that discovers our vision of the arab world through our eyes. AMAL offers other way of seeing.

The section of documentaries is related with the mounth. Across this section we can listen the voice of the documentaries of AMAL. These documentaries speak of the reality of de arab world, of its worries, its beauty and hope.

The fingers represent the section of short films. AMAL defends that with everyone of the fingers we can palpate the essence of the more small.

Besides these categories, the VI edition of AMAL will surprise with other two sections that have an intimate relation with the arab culture.

One of these sections is the section tasting. AMAL relates this category with the sense of smell with it that we can submerge in the world of the sensations. Like this, with the section tasting, AMAL invites to enjoy of the 1001 tastes and scent of the arab world.

With this aim of we have prepared a select menu with the best of the arab gastronomy. On this menu we combine different typical dishes as for example: cream of varied vegetables, brick pasta or salad. Then, as principal dish we have a selection of snaks of varied meats, and as climax a typical dessert, arab cakes with green tea.

The section of concerts is the last of the sections of AMAL 2008. This section, identified with the sense of the hearing, is an enigmatic portal that leads us beyond the worldly through the sounds, of the music.

But for can live the Festival with the five senses, is necessary to bear our earth in mind. For AMAL the heart is the place where we save the strong that made us be alive. Thank the heart we can perceive the world through our senses. It is the only place of our body that lose never the hope.

The same hope (amal) that goes to the festival year last year and that have helped to the Festival to be one of the main festivals of arab cinema of Europe and the only festival in Spain settled in this thematic.
