Presentation

The Biennale's Mostra Internazionale D'arte Cinematografica is to open with Space Cowboys, directed by Clint Eastwood who stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland. The Golden Lion of Lifetime Achievement will be presented to Clint Eastwood during the Opening Ceremony. The film is about four retired pilots, recalled by NASA for a special mission following their exclusion from the space program in the 1960's because of their nonconformist behavior. The film, scheduled to open in the US on August 4, 2000, will also be screened at Deauville 2000, also honoring the cinema veteran at their event.

Venice will close on 9 September with Tony Gatlif's Vengo ( France/ Spain) starring Antonio Canales, Orestes Villasan-Rodriguez and Antonio Perez Dechent.

LiamThe competition selection - 19 films - features the latest works by Robert Altman - Dr. T and the Women; Manoel de Oliveira - Palavra e utopia; Raoul Ruiz - Fils de deux mères ou comédie de l’innocence; Stephen Frears' Liam with Ian Hart, Claire Hacket, Anne Reid in a rite of passage story of a seven-year-old boy growing up in a predominantly Irish Catholic community in the 1930’s; as well as The Man Who Cried with Christina Ricci, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro and Johnny Depp, directed by Sally Potter; and Julian Schnabel's Before Night Falls featuring Javier Bardem, Olivier Martinez, Johnny Depp and Hector Babenco.

The six out of competition screenings are: Woody Allen's Small Time Crooks, Claude Chabrol's Merci pour le chocolat, Takeshi Kitano's Brother, Martin Scorsese's Il dolce cinema, Fernando Trueba's Calle 54, and Gus Van Sant's Jokes: Chapter 1 “Easter” (work in progress).

In the Sogni e Visioni (Dreams and Visions) selection are a number of films soon to be released or already in the theatres including Sade by Benoit Jacquot (France), U-571 by Jonathan Mostow (US), and What Lies Beneath from Robert Zemeckis (US).

The two noncompetitive sections at the festival, Cinema of the Present and Dreams and Visions screen films with original styles that are not geared toward mass audiences. Another sidebar, called "New Territories" features films and audiovisual material in different formats not in competition, which characterize the search for new languages in film and audiovisual work. The Corto-Cortissimo competition screens short-length films (under 30 minutes, with no animation). These films vie for the Silver Lion and, where appropriate, two special mention awards to be judged by an international jury. The International Critics' Week selection will screen 7 films not in competition - debut works - independently selected by the National Association of Italian Film Critics. Tribute screenings are dedicated to Pavlovic and Clint Eastwood.

The Best of the Rest

Stone will attend the start of the festival; on Wednesday 30 August she will present Clint Eastwood with the Golden Lion for his contribution to cinema, and on Thursday 31 August she will preside over the evening gala "Cinema against Aids Venice".

All of the debut full-length films presented in the Festival's various sections will compete for the Premio Venezia Opera Prima - Luigi de Laurentiis Prize, worth 100,000 USD donated by Filmauro, to be shared in equal parts between the director and producer. The director will also receive 20,000 metres of film donated by Kodak.

For families with children, the festival is once again hosting the Week of Lions dedicated to young people. Young cinema lovers can enjoy the luxury of a week at the Venice International Film Festival to include special offers on film tickets, accommodation and public transport.
