Wild, sexy comedies and tough gangster films are among the attractions at this year's Venice Viennale. This in 'Before The Code: 1929-1934'. Fest director Alexander Horwath believes the retrospective will prove how provocative directors like William Wellman and Michael Curtiz often dismissed as journeymen really were.
Other highlights include a tribute to 'British Realism', featuring the work of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh; André Techine and Olivier Assayas retrospectives, a colourful selection of Japanese and East Asian cinema, the Twilight Zone series of midnight movies, an intriguing sidebar celebrating Franz Kafka's favourite movies, a strong selection of documentaries, and two premieres of new Austrian films.
In the 'Lost And Found' section, Horwath has unearthed Weltstadt in den Flepeljakren, a documentary made in Chicago in 1931 by German filmmaker, Heinrich Hauser.
No festival is complete without a few movies from the US Majors these days: John Carpenter's Escape From LA, described by Horwath as 'an anti-Independence Day', and Danny De Vito's Matilda are likely to be among this year's offerings. GM
