The curators involved in this year's Panorama Italiano, the sidebar that presents local fare not selected for Competition or the Finestra sulle Immagini, have developed the programme into a full-fledged "Critics' Week" of Italian cinema.
This selection seems to have taken place with little of the usual controversy surrounding the sidebar. The secret for the success of this year's selection could be the mixture of directors from different generations, as well as the focus on psychological fare, instead of the usual cynical social analysis.
With some strong titles such as Maurizio Nichetti's Luna e l'altra and Renato De Maria's A un passo dal buio being selected for other festivals like Toronto and San Sebastián, it was fairly easy for the "esperti", or experts, to come up with a strong programme.
The Panorama Italiano curators also have an eye for the casting element in the films they select. It results in quite a few interesting combinations: We get to see films with Roul Bova, the teen idol in Franco Giraldi's La frontiera or Ugo Chiti's Albergo Roma with Deborah Caprioglio who, before applying her talents to more serious parts, reached some degree of fame in soft-core movies by Tinto Brass. Silvio Orlando, one of Nanni Moretti's favourite actors, stars in Sergio Citti's I magi randagi (We Free Kings).
The only new actress seems to be Nicoletta Magalotti, the former lead singer of rock group Violet Eves, who stars in Maurizio Fiume's Isotta.
Finally, Sivio Orlando teams up again with Francesca Neri in Wilma Labate's La mia generazione. Ivo Bonacorsi
