Symposium is, "the soul of the festival"

Festival topper Gillo Pontecorvo describes the three day symposium on Cinema In The Third Millennium as "the soul of this year's festival". The broad idea behind it is examine the relationship between cinema and new technology.

Filmmakers, economists and sociologists from all over the world are participating.

The conference started today (31st) with an introduction from Pontecorvo and vice-premier Walter Veltroni. Also scheduled is a speech by producer Marin Karmitz on "cinema and the new visual media". A group of renowned filmmakers are due to contribute.

Sunday morning (1st), centre stage is taken by economists François De Brabant and Roman Gubern, who will be debating the role of cinema "in the changing media landscape". Scott Anderson, who won an Oscar for special effects in Babe, will be discussing his work, while Gabriele Salvatores will talk about the SFX in his film, Nirvana.

In the afternoon, the delegates ponder problems new media pose for writers. Jay David Boulter gives an address on "Hypertext, Virtual Reality and Cinematic Point Of View". Mike Boudry of the Computer Film Company and Volker Schlöndorff are among the participants. Various filmmakers describe how new technology has affected their own work.

Monday begins with a speech from Peppino Ortoleva on "Cinema and the destiny of narrative". Jury chairman Roman Polanski is among those contributing to the debate. In the afternoon, following an address from Patrice Flichy. Bernardo Bertolucci will make the closing speech.
