According to its director, Franco Piavoli, Voci nel tempo is a film about 'the seasons of life. Through episodes, situations but above all emotional evocations, the flow of life in a small village becomes a choral story. He records the childhood games, the surprises and troubles of adolescence, falling in love, first disillusionments, the dances, loves, dates, marriage and the nostalgia for lost youth.
Then the serene conversations in the summer evenings; even the lonely life with a TV set as the only company.'
The film counterpoints the line of life childhood, youth, adulthood, old age - with the succession of the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. As Piavoli puts it, 'Both succeed each other and there is no real continuity because human life is being renewed from one generation to another. The film ends with the scene of children running in the snow and skating on ice to signify that life is renewed continually even in the winter ice.'
Piavoli, born in 1933 in Brescia, practised law for five years before developing an interest in photography, painting and cinema. In the 1970s he made several short films in 8mm, and in 1982 directed his first feature, Il pianeta azzuro, which was shown in Venice. In 1989 he directed Nostos, il ritono which was presented at the Locarno film festival.
A true music lover, he directed some operas in the 1980s and 1990s. His latest film, can be seen as the final part of 'The Blue Planet' trilogy, while the director himself sees Voci nel tempo as 'the conclusion of my search for the polyphonic cinema.' Damjana Finci
