It seems that I magi randagi was a project dear to the heart of Pier Paolo Pasolini, a story strongly related to the mystical and unknown 'PornoTeoKolossal', the film which Pasolini was working on before his tragic death. It is realised with I magi randagi, a film written and directed by Sergio Citti, the Italian director considered the sole inheritor of Pasolini's cinematic legacy.
Desperately searching for a new messiah, three contemporary wise men are travelling today's world: a German soldier (Rolf Zacher), a Sicilian Mafiosi (Silvio Orlando) and a French ringmaster (Patrick Bauchau). They come out of a nativity scene following the star in a surreal and picaresque journey. In the distinct style of Citti, the movie is a mixture of tragedy and farce. The three wise men are searching for the real baby Jesus in a setting where the sense of being is completely lost and madness reigns supreme. The actors are moved by simple and fundamental emotions.
As in his previous seven feature films, international stars have played sincere, poetic but always humble roles like the cameos of Jodie Foster and Catherine Deneuve in Casotto (1977) or Malcolm McDowell's performance in Mortacci (1989). Evidently these stars have recognised in this filmmaker a talent that exceeds that of merely being Pasolini's heir.
Citti has an innate sense of storytelling, that he has developed since boyhood, and the revelation that Citti presents in I magi randagi is another scenario that only this director is capable of creating.
