The story of Albergo Roma unfolds when a small Italian town, in the late 30s, is thrown into a state of angst after a dog, vanishing into the dark, returns with the remnants of a baby. It casts an ominous shadow, but the community continues to prepare for a grand public event: the arrival of Benito Mussolini.
United by the crime, the community tries to determine how best to handle the scandal so as not to upset its plans. The secretary of the Fascist Party suggests that everyone must keep quiet and imposes six days of silence prior to Mussolini's visit.
The secret of the macabre discovery spreads throughout the town, all the characters in the film become accomplices in silence.
The calm after the gruesome discovery is shattered when a mysterious character, presumed to be serving the regime, checks in at the Hotel Roma (Albergo Roma). His arrival signifies to all those involved that the news of the infanticide must have leaked, and that this man has come to investigate the incident. A change of action is taken to counteract what the man might know. The culprit must now be found.
Albergo Roma is based on a theatre piece called Allegretto per bene ma non tropo. After a career in theatre, Chiti started working in films in 1990, primarily as a scriptwriter. Chiti says that it was the easiest of his texts to transform from theatre to film: 'It is very complex, choral in style with continuous changes in setting, but the narrative unites all the personalities in one story. It is a story which is both sinister and funny,'
